Medication Issues <strong>and</strong> Concerns<br />

Osteoporosis medications<br />

Bisphosphonates, e.g.,<br />

alendronate<br />

ib<strong>and</strong>ronate<br />

risedronate<br />

Platelet inhibitors<br />

All platelet inhibitors, e.g.,<br />

ticlopidine<br />

dipyridamole<br />

dipyridamole<br />

extended-release <strong>and</strong><br />

aspirin (as fixed-dose<br />

combination)<br />

aspirin<br />

clopidogrel<br />

Dosage<br />

Dronabinol may cause tachycardia, orthostatic<br />

hypotension, dizziness, dysphoria, <strong>and</strong> impaired<br />

cognition, which may lead to falls<br />

These medications must be taken according to<br />

very specific directions, including time <strong>of</strong> day,<br />

position, <strong>and</strong> timing relative to other medications<br />

<strong>and</strong> food<br />

Monitoring<br />

Individuals receiving these medications should be<br />

monitored closely for gastrointestinal<br />

complications, including esophageal or gastric<br />

erosion<br />

Adverse Consequences<br />

Potential to cause gastrointestinal symptoms<br />

including dysphagia, esophagitis, gastritis, or<br />

esophageal <strong>and</strong> gastric ulcers, especially when<br />

given to individuals who are also taking oral<br />

corticosteroids, aspirin or other nonsteroidal antiinflammatory<br />

drugs (NSAIDs)<br />

Interactions/Adverse Consequences<br />

May cause thrombocytopenia <strong>and</strong> increase risk <strong>of</strong><br />

bleeding<br />

Common side effects include headache, dizziness,<br />

<strong>and</strong> vomiting<br />

Concurrent use with warfarin or NSAIDs may<br />

increase risk <strong>of</strong> bleeding<br />

Indication<br />

Use may be appropriate in individuals who have<br />

had a previous stroke or have evidence <strong>of</strong> stroke<br />

precursors (i.e., transient ischemic attacks (TIAs)),<br />

<strong>and</strong> who cannot tolerate aspirin or another platelet<br />

inhibitor<br />

Adverse Consequences
