Staff <strong>and</strong> visitors adhere to precautions <strong>and</strong> related processes, including the use <strong>of</strong><br />

PPE;<br />

Precautions/accommodations are in place <strong>and</strong> followed (as recommended, e.g.,<br />

gowns, singles rooms or adequate space between residents, exclusion from group<br />

activities, etc.) for residents with potentially transmissible infections;<br />

Staff utilize appropriate precautions when residents on special precautions are<br />

permitted out <strong>of</strong> their rooms,(e.g., mask on resident with TB in the halls, wound<br />

drainage contained); <strong>and</strong><br />

Staff involved in the care <strong>and</strong> management <strong>of</strong> residents with special needs, e.g.,<br />

urinary catheters (also note characteristics <strong>of</strong> urine, which may indicate potential<br />

infection), wound care, respiratory treatments, <strong>and</strong> residents on ventilators,<br />

receiving IVs, or with tracheotomies follow current accepted infection control<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>of</strong> practice.<br />

Also, observe residents for signs <strong>and</strong> symptoms <strong>of</strong> potential infection, such as:<br />

Elevated respiratory rate or labored breathing, coughing, congestion;<br />

Vomiting or loss <strong>of</strong> appetite, diarrhea;<br />

Skin rash, reddened or draining eyes, wound drainage; <strong>and</strong><br />

Frequency/urgency <strong>of</strong> urination, malodorous urine.<br />

Observe for cleaning <strong>and</strong> disinfecting to determine whether:<br />

Equipment in transmission based precaution rooms is either dedicated to that<br />

resident <strong>and</strong> appropriately cleaned or is thoroughly cleaned <strong>and</strong> disinfected<br />

between residents using appropriate agents <strong>and</strong> procedures;<br />

High touch surfaces in the environment are visibly soiled (i.e., contaminated) or<br />

have been cleaned <strong>and</strong> disinfected;<br />

Small non-disposable equipment such as glucose meters, scissors, <strong>and</strong><br />

thermometers are cleaned <strong>and</strong> appropriately disinfected after each use for<br />

individual resident care;<br />

Single-use items (e.g., blood glucose lancet, other sharps) are properly disposed<br />

<strong>of</strong> after one use;<br />

Single resident use items (e.g., basins, bed pans) are maintained to be visibly<br />

clean for use, <strong>and</strong> are disposed <strong>of</strong> after use by a single resident;<br />

Resident dressings <strong>and</strong> supplies are properly stored to maintain their integrity, <strong>and</strong><br />

soiled dressings <strong>and</strong> supplies are appropriately discarded; <strong>and</strong>
