P. barbatus and P. madagascariensis were the two most commonly tested plant species,
with extracts from both plants being more susceptible to gram-positive bacteria
(Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis) than gram-negative bacteria (Ascensao et
al., 1998; Rabe and van Staden, 1998; Matu and van Staden, 2003; Wellsow et al., 2006;
Kisangau et al., 2007; Figueiredo et al., 2010). Coleus kilimandschari was found to be
active against a wide variety of gram-negative and -positive bacteria (Vagionas et al.,
2007).
