arose from his service during the French<br />
and Indian wars, when as major, he was<br />
staff <strong>of</strong>ficer <strong>of</strong> the First <strong>Connecticut</strong> Regi-<br />
ment, and is said to have taken "a con-<br />
spicuous part in the struggle." In peace<br />
times he applied himself to agriculture,<br />
being possessed <strong>of</strong> extensive land hold-<br />
ings. He died May 9, 1769. His wife,<br />
whom he married on August 17, 1727,<br />
was Mabel Belden, born February 9,<br />
1707-08, died December 13, 1789.<br />
Their son, Ozias Griswold, was born<br />
January 16, 1735, in Griswoldville. The<br />
farming <strong>of</strong> his estate became the main<br />
occupation <strong>of</strong> Ozias Griswold, as it had<br />
been that <strong>of</strong> his father and grandfather.<br />
He died December 4, 1815, leaving issue,<br />
<strong>of</strong> which this record is interested in that<br />
by his first wife, Anna (on records<br />
and gravestone, "Anner"), daughter <strong>of</strong><br />
Thomas and Mary (Francis) Stanley, <strong>of</strong><br />
New Britain. She was born February 5,<br />
1722; married December II, 1760; died<br />
July 26, 1825.<br />
James Griswold, son <strong>of</strong> Ozias and Anna<br />
(Stanley) Griswold, was born August 21,<br />
1783, and married, January 22, 1812,<br />
Lucy, daughter <strong>of</strong> Wait Robbins. She<br />
was born January 13, 1783, and died<br />
June 19, 1855. James Griswold, be-<br />
sides carrying on a farm, engaged with<br />
his brother, Thomas, in the business <strong>of</strong><br />
dressing cloth.<br />
Albert Clinton Griswold, son <strong>of</strong> James<br />
and Lucy (Robbins) Griswold, was born<br />
in Wethersfield, September 4, 1827. He<br />
received a superior education, mainly<br />
at the Suffield Literary Institute, and<br />
entered the teaching pr<strong>of</strong>ession, engag-<br />
ing also to some extent in farming, at<br />
the old homestead. During the Civil<br />
War, Albert Clinton Griswold conducted<br />
a private academy, located in the Marble<br />
Block, Central Row, Hartford, and he<br />
inaugurated military training as one <strong>of</strong><br />

the main essentials <strong>of</strong> the school curriculum.<br />
On January 13, 1853, he married<br />
Caroline Louisa, daughter <strong>of</strong> William<br />
Goodrich, <strong>of</strong> Stepney Parish, Weth-<br />
ersfield. To them were born six children<br />
1. William Goodrich, born May 4, 1854.<br />
2. Frederick Albert, <strong>of</strong> whom further. 3.<br />
Alma Louisa, who married Dr. Julius E.<br />
Griswold. 4. Mary Robbins, who mar-<br />
ried Charles E. Buckland, <strong>of</strong> Hartford.<br />
5. Samuel B., now assistant passenger<br />
agent <strong>of</strong> the Rochester & Pittsburgh<br />
Railroad, at Rochester, New York. 6.<br />
Ellen Means, who married the Rev. Herbert<br />
Macy, <strong>of</strong> Newington. Mr. and Mrs.<br />
Albert Clinton Griswold were members<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Congregational church at Rocky<br />
Hill, the former holding church <strong>of</strong>fice as<br />
deacon.<br />
Frederick Albert Griswold, son <strong>of</strong><br />
Albert Clinton and Caroline Louisa<br />
(Goodrich) Griswold, was educated in the<br />
public schools <strong>of</strong> his native town. When<br />
fourteen years <strong>of</strong> age he went to Roches-<br />
ter, New York, where he was engaged as<br />
a clerk in the mercantile establishment<br />
<strong>of</strong> his uncle Frederick Goodrich. He had<br />
barely reached his majority when, upon<br />
the death <strong>of</strong> his uncle, he formed a part-<br />
nership with the junior member <strong>of</strong> the<br />
firm under the name <strong>of</strong> Witherspoon<br />
& Griswold. In 1885, he sold his interest<br />
in the business, and returned to Con-<br />
necticut, becoming district agent at<br />
Hartford, in 1889, for the Northwestern<br />
Mutual Life Insurance Company, <strong>of</strong> Milwaukee.<br />
In 1903 he became general<br />
agent for northern and eastern Connecti-<br />
cut, and in 1906 was given the general<br />
agency for the entire State.<br />
On June 18, 1878, Mr. Griswold married<br />
Mary Fosdick, daughter <strong>of</strong> Henry<br />
Allyn and Catherine Skinner (Bacon)<br />
Stillman, <strong>of</strong> Wethersfield. To them, in<br />
the many years <strong>of</strong> their married life, have<br />
been born ten children: 1. Katharine<br />
