Chauncy, the latter named a daughter <strong>of</strong><br />

Robert Eyre, a barrister <strong>of</strong> Wiltshire,<br />

England, and his wife, Agnes, daughter <strong>of</strong><br />

John Still, Bishop <strong>of</strong> Bath and Wills.<br />

Charles Chauncy was the son <strong>of</strong> George<br />

and Hannah (Welsh) Chauncy, <strong>of</strong> New<br />

Place and Yardley Bury, Hertfordshire,<br />

England, baptized November 5, 1592, in<br />

the Yardley Bury church, died February<br />

19, 1671.<br />

Captain Edward Bulkeley, second son<br />

<strong>of</strong> Rev. Gershom Bulkeley and his wife,<br />

Sarah (Chauncy) Bulkeley, was born in<br />

1672, settled in Wethersfield, where he<br />

died August 27, 1748. He was collector<br />

<strong>of</strong> taxes in that town in 1703, selectman in<br />

1708, was admitted an attorney, at the<br />

County Court in June, 171 1, and served<br />

as justice <strong>of</strong> the peace. He married, July<br />

14, 1704, Dorothy Prescott, born March<br />

31, 1 681, in Concord, Massachusetts, died<br />

November 30, 1760, in Wethersfield,<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> Jonathan and Dorothy Pres-<br />

cott.<br />

Jonathan Bulkeley, fifth son <strong>of</strong> Cap-<br />

tain Edward (2) and Dorothy (Prescott)<br />

Bulkeley, was born September 11, 1718,<br />

and died June 16, 1777. He married, November<br />

13, 1746, Abigail Williams, <strong>of</strong><br />

Wethersfield, whose parentage cannot be<br />

discovered. Stephen Bulkeley, eldest son<br />

<strong>of</strong> Jonathan and Abigail (Williams) Bulkeley,<br />

was born December 19, 1749, was<br />

a captain <strong>of</strong> militia, and farmer in that<br />

part <strong>of</strong> Wethersfield which is now Rocky<br />

Hill. He operated a line <strong>of</strong> vessels to the<br />

West Indies, and was an extensive trader.<br />

He married Martha Marsh, born November<br />

10, 1751, in Wethersfield, died there<br />

April 26, 1804, daughter <strong>of</strong> John and<br />

Abigail (Bulkeley) Marsh. Stephen Bul-<br />

keley died May 6, 1813. Frederic Bulkeley,<br />

fourth son <strong>of</strong> Stephen and Martha<br />

(Marsh) Bulkeley, was born June 1, 1792,<br />

in Wethersfield, and made his home on<br />

the east side <strong>of</strong> Broad street, Wethers-<br />

field, where he died September 28, 1850.<br />

He married, October 6, 1814, Nancy<br />

Riley, who was born July 12, 1792, died<br />

December 23, 1857, daughter <strong>of</strong> James<br />

and Esther (Goodrich) Riley.<br />

Stephen Bulkeley, only son <strong>of</strong> Frederic<br />

and Nancy (Riley) Bulkeley, was born<br />

May 6, 1825, baptized August 28, follow-<br />

ing, in Wethersfield, where he spent a<br />

long and useful life. His educational op-<br />

portunities were limited, but he was a<br />

man <strong>of</strong> sound judgment, clear perceptions<br />

and was self-educated to a good degree.<br />

Industrious as a farmer, he prospered,<br />

and was among the first to introduce the<br />

culture <strong>of</strong> tobacco in Wethersfield, realizing<br />

handsome returns from his crop. He<br />

also engaged largely in purchasing the<br />

product <strong>of</strong> other growers from New York<br />

dealers, and operated a packing house on<br />

his farm. Sagacious and upright, he<br />

enjoyed the confidence <strong>of</strong> the business<br />

world and <strong>of</strong> his neighbors. An Episco-<br />

palian, he was an active supporter <strong>of</strong> re-<br />

ligious services and interests, and was a<br />

warm friend <strong>of</strong> education, doing everything<br />

in his power to promote the pro-<br />

gress <strong>of</strong> free schools. Previous to the<br />

Civil War, he had been a Democrat in<br />

political principle, but the issues which<br />

brought on that struggle compelled him<br />

to aid in the organization and support <strong>of</strong><br />

the Republican party. During the war,<br />

he was a member <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Selectmen,<br />

and the Board <strong>of</strong> Relief, and again<br />

in 1882-83. In 1883, he represented<br />

Wethersfield in the State Legislature, and<br />

continued its representative six years.<br />

Mr. Bulkeley was among the founders <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>Connecticut</strong> Society <strong>of</strong> the Patriotic<br />

Order Sons <strong>of</strong> the American Revolution.<br />

He died June 21, 1891. He married, January<br />

23, 1850, Prudence May Warner,<br />

who was born February 5, 1827, in Weth-<br />

ersfield, and died there November 29,
