Tobacco Grower.<br />
A native and life-long resident <strong>of</strong> Glastonbury,<br />
where much <strong>of</strong> the best Connec-<br />
ticut tobacco is grown, Mr. Hollister is<br />
descended from a pioneer family <strong>of</strong> the<br />
town.<br />
The founder <strong>of</strong> the family in America<br />
was John Hollister, who came to this<br />
country about 1642, probably from Weymouth,<br />
England, and was admitted a freeman<br />
by the General Court in Boston,<br />
May 10, 1643. Soon after he removed<br />
to Wethersfield, <strong>Connecticut</strong>, and represented<br />
that town in the General Court<br />
at Hartford, November 15, 1644, an d<br />
again in 1654 and 1656. He was lieuten-<br />
ant <strong>of</strong> the local militia company. His<br />
wife, Joanna, daughter <strong>of</strong> Hon. Richard<br />
Treat, died in October, 1694. Hon. Rich-<br />
ard Treat was a pioneer <strong>of</strong> Wethersfield,<br />
came <strong>of</strong> a good family and possessed a<br />
fine education ; he was a most useful cit-<br />
izen in the pioneer days.<br />
John Hollister, eldest son <strong>of</strong> John and<br />
Joanna (Treat) Hollister, was born about<br />
1644, m Wethersfield, and became prom-<br />
inent in that part <strong>of</strong> the town which is<br />
now Glastonbury, where he died Novem-<br />
ber, 171 1. He married, November 20,<br />
1667, Sarah Goodrich, daughter <strong>of</strong> William<br />
and Sarah (Marvin) Goodrich, born<br />
in 1632, and died in Glastonbury, in 1700.<br />
Sarah Marvin was daughter <strong>of</strong> Matthew<br />

<strong>of</strong> the original proprietors <strong>of</strong> Hartford in<br />
1638, and one <strong>of</strong> the grantees <strong>of</strong> Norwalk,<br />
and an original settler in 1653. He was a<br />
son <strong>of</strong> William Marvin, <strong>of</strong> Hegasset in<br />
Suffolk, England.<br />
Thomas Hollister, son <strong>of</strong> John and<br />
Sarah (Goodrich) Hollister, was born<br />
January 14, 1672. He was a deacon <strong>of</strong><br />
the church, a weaver by occupation, in<br />
Glastonbury. A house built by him there<br />
was still standing in 1882. He died in<br />
Glastonbury, October 12, 1741. He mar-<br />
ried Dorothy Hills, born about 1677, in<br />
Glastonbury, a daughter <strong>of</strong> Joseph and<br />
Elizabeth Hills, died October 5, 1741. She<br />
was a granddaughter <strong>of</strong> William Hills,<br />
who came in the ship "Lyon" to Boston<br />
in 1632, settled in Roxbury in 1635,<br />
removed to Hartford, where he died in<br />
1683. He married Mary, widow <strong>of</strong> John<br />
Steele, and daughter <strong>of</strong> Andrew Warner,<br />
<strong>of</strong> Hadley, Massachusetts. Joseph Hills,<br />
son <strong>of</strong> William Hills, was baptized March<br />
17, 1650, in Hartford, and died in Glastonbury,<br />
November 8, 1713. His wife's<br />
name was Elizabeth, and their eldest<br />
child Dorothy became the wife <strong>of</strong> Thomas<br />
Hollister.<br />
Josiah Hollister, eldest child <strong>of</strong> Thomas<br />
and Dorothy (Hills) Hollister, born June<br />
7, 1696, in Glastonbury, lived in that<br />
town, and was a landowner in Sharon,<br />
<strong>Connecticut</strong>, where he purchased, in<br />
1742, for six hundred and fifty pounds, a<br />
full share in the town. He may have<br />
lived there later in life. He died January<br />
3, 1749, and was buried in Glastonbury.<br />
He married, January 18, 1718, Martha<br />
Miller, born 1698, died July 12, 1777,<br />
daughter <strong>of</strong> William Miller.<br />
Elijah Hollister, youngest child <strong>of</strong> Josiah<br />
and Martha (Miller) Hollister, born<br />
May, 1729, lived for a short time in Farm-<br />
ington, <strong>Connecticut</strong>, later removed to
