1730, baptized January 18th following, in<br />
Hartford, died in West Hartford, May 22,<br />
1819. He married Mary Kellogg, born<br />
July 3, 1736, in Hadley, and died September<br />
21, 1775, daughter <strong>of</strong> Steven and<br />
Mary (Cook) Kellogg. They united with<br />
the West Hartford Church, July 30,<br />
1758. Their fourth son, Phineas Shepard,<br />
born November 2, 1766, in Bloomfield,<br />
died in 1846, in Hartford. He mar-<br />
ried Mary Webster, born September 1,<br />
1772, died in 1848. She was the daugh-<br />
ter <strong>of</strong> Samuel and Huldah (Skinner)<br />
Webster. Their sixth daughter, Jane<br />
Shepard, born August 24, 1808, married,<br />
April 28, 1834, Norman Hubbard Gillette,<br />
as previously noted. Mary Webster, wife<br />
<strong>of</strong> Phineas Shepard, was descended from<br />
Governor John Webster, <strong>of</strong> <strong>Connecticut</strong>,<br />
one <strong>of</strong> the original settlers <strong>of</strong> Hartford.<br />
He was magistrate <strong>of</strong> the Colony twenty<br />
years, from 1639, a deputy governor in<br />
1655, and governor the following year.<br />
He became one <strong>of</strong> the fifty-nine signers<br />
<strong>of</strong> the agreement to settle at Hadley,<br />
where he died April 5, 1685. He retained<br />
his estate in Hartford, the use <strong>of</strong> which<br />
he gave to his wife, Agnes, during her<br />
life. Their eldest child, Robert Webster,<br />
born about 1639-40, was representative to<br />
the General Court at Hartford in 1658-59.<br />
He signed the agreement to go to Hadley,<br />
but remained in Hartford and was<br />
executor <strong>of</strong> his father's will. He died in<br />
1676, and his wife, Susanna, died about<br />
1705 ; the inventory <strong>of</strong> her estate having<br />
been made November 17, <strong>of</strong> that year.<br />
The first child mentioned in her will was<br />
John Webster, probably the eldest son,<br />
born November 10, 1653, m Hartford, and<br />
died in 1694. He married Sarah, daughter<br />
<strong>of</strong> Jacob and Sarah (Whiting) Mygatt,<br />
and their second son was Ebenezer<br />
Webster, baptized July 14, 1689. He was<br />
a miller in Hartford, and died February<br />

1, 1776. He married his cousin, Hannah<br />
Webster, born November 7, 1695, died<br />
November 11, 1775, the daughter <strong>of</strong><br />
Robert and Hannah (Beckley) Webster.<br />
Their second son, Medad Webster, was<br />
baptized January 5, 1724, in the Second<br />
Church <strong>of</strong> Hartford, and became a mem-<br />
ber <strong>of</strong> that church. He was a farmer in<br />
Hartford, and sucessively ensign, lieutenant<br />
and captain <strong>of</strong> the Second Company<br />
<strong>of</strong> Militia, and died April 9, 1793. Me married,<br />
November 10, 1748, Elizabeth, daughter<br />
<strong>of</strong> Joseph Holton, and she died August<br />
18, 1805. Their eldest child, Samuel<br />
Webster, baptized in September, 1749,<br />
was a farmer in Hartford, and died there<br />
March 25, 1813. He married, about 1770,<br />
Huldah Skinner, died April 1, 1813. She<br />
was a descendant <strong>of</strong> John Skinner, who<br />
came to Hartford with Rev. Thomas<br />
Hooker. Their eldest child, Mary or<br />
Mollie Webster, born September 1, 1772,<br />
baptized July 31, 1791, married, Novem-<br />
ber 24, 1791, Phineas Shepard, and died<br />
in 1848. She received from her father<br />
as a marriage portion a slave woman,<br />
Jinny, who served her faithfully until<br />
death. Their sixth daughter, Jane<br />
Shepard, born August 24, 1808, became<br />
the wife <strong>of</strong> Norman Hubbard Gillette,<br />
as above related.<br />
Charles Stanton Gillette, second son <strong>of</strong><br />
Norman Hubbard Gillette, was born October<br />
10, 1843, m Odgensburg, New York,<br />
and died in Hartford, <strong>Connecticut</strong>, January<br />
10, 1887. In youth he attended what<br />
was known as the South School, now the<br />
Chauncey Harris School, <strong>of</strong> Hartford. He<br />
was subsequently a student in the Hart-<br />
ford High School for one year, and at the<br />
age <strong>of</strong> seventeen years was recommended<br />
for a position in the old Merchant and<br />
Manufacturers Bank <strong>of</strong> Hartford, which<br />
became in i860 the First National Bank.<br />
After twelve years <strong>of</strong> faithful service he<br />
was made cashier, and in 1883 became
