and in 1715 settled in Preston, Con-<br />
necticut. He married, August 30, 1716,<br />
Hannah Belcher, and their son, William<br />
Tucker, was born in Preston, May 28,<br />
1737, and died November 5, 1819. He<br />
married Esther Morgan. Stephen Tucker,<br />
the son <strong>of</strong> William and Esther (Morgan)<br />
Tucker, was born in Preston, April 30,<br />
1768, and died August 15, 1853. During<br />
the War <strong>of</strong> 1812, he was captain <strong>of</strong> an<br />
artillery company at Stonington Point.<br />
lie married, January 17, 1793, Eunice<br />
Baldwin, <strong>of</strong> Stonington, <strong>Connecticut</strong>, and<br />
their son, Erastus Tucker, was the father<br />
<strong>of</strong> William Tucker, <strong>of</strong> this review. He<br />
was born in Griswold, <strong>Connecticut</strong>, Au-<br />
gust 10, 1794, and died in Hartford, September,<br />
1868. He was a paper manufac-<br />
turer, and was located in Hartford the<br />
greater part <strong>of</strong> his life. In 1812 he was<br />
called out as a soldier and served at<br />
Stonington. He married (first) Eliza<br />
Hovey, born July 29, 1804, and died<br />
March 9, 1837, the daughter <strong>of</strong> Dudley<br />
and Mary (Moore) Hovey, <strong>of</strong> Windham,<br />
<strong>Connecticut</strong>. They were the parents <strong>of</strong><br />
four children : Mary Frances, who mar-<br />
ried D. W. C. Pond; Edwin, deceased;<br />
Henry, married Amelia E. Olmstead<br />
George, married Emma H. Hunt. Mr.<br />

ter <strong>of</strong> Captain Samuel and Dolly (Ingalls)<br />
Dresser, <strong>of</strong> Abington, <strong>Connecticut</strong>. Her<br />
father was captain <strong>of</strong> a New London<br />
Company during the War <strong>of</strong> 1812. By<br />
his second marriage Erastus Tucker was<br />
the father <strong>of</strong> the following children<br />

Emma Augusta (Dresser) Tucker, was<br />
born in New Britain, <strong>Connecticut</strong>, February<br />
5, 1848. He was quite young when<br />
his parents moved to Hartford, where he<br />
has resided ever since. His early educa-<br />
tion was received in the public schools,<br />
after which, at the age <strong>of</strong> nineteen years,<br />
he became a clerk in the wholesale dry<br />
goods house <strong>of</strong> Collins Brothers & Com-<br />
pany, continuing with that house for<br />
eleven years, acquiring a sound business<br />
education and valuable experience. In<br />
January, 1878, he formed a connection<br />
with the business house <strong>of</strong> which he is<br />
now the honored head. He became a<br />
partner in 1889, and has maintained that<br />
relation until the present time, the firm<br />
reorganizing under its present name <strong>of</strong><br />
Tucker & Goodwin, March 7, 1896. They<br />
are wholesale grocers, doing a large and<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>itable business. Mr. Tucker has<br />
devoted the best years <strong>of</strong> his life to the<br />
development <strong>of</strong> his business, and has confined<br />
himself closely to its management,<br />
having few outside interests. He is a<br />
thorough master <strong>of</strong> his business, a hard<br />
worker and capable in every department,<br />
ever courteous and kindly. The firm<br />
bears a high reputation, the result <strong>of</strong> long<br />
years <strong>of</strong> fair dealing with customers. Mr.<br />
Tucker was a member <strong>of</strong> Park Church,<br />
Hartford, and is identified with its suc-<br />
cessor, the Immanuel Congregational<br />
Church, Incorporated, and is a member<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Twentieth Century Club. He has<br />
never married.<br />

business men <strong>of</strong> that town. He was born<br />
November 23, 1863, in Unionville, Con-<br />
