Enfield, <strong>Connecticut</strong>, in 1845, daughter<br />

<strong>of</strong> Caleb Jones and Chloe (Wolcott) Bancr<strong>of</strong>t,<br />

her father a descendant <strong>of</strong> John<br />

Bancr<strong>of</strong>t, who came from London, England,<br />

June 12, 1632, and settled at Lynn,<br />

Massachusetts.<br />

Stewart Northrop Dunning was born<br />

at Peekskill, New York, December 7,<br />

1876. He was brought by his parents to<br />

Hartford when but six months <strong>of</strong> age, and<br />

that city has continued his home to the<br />

present time. He was educated in the<br />

public schools <strong>of</strong> Hartford, Denver, Colo-<br />

rado, and Windsor, <strong>Connecticut</strong>, complet-<br />

ing his studies in Hartford High School at<br />

the age <strong>of</strong> sixteen. At that age he secured<br />

a position in one <strong>of</strong> the large insurance<br />

<strong>of</strong>fices <strong>of</strong> Hartford, where he remained<br />

for four years. During this time he sup-<br />

plemented his education by evening study<br />

in various academic subjects and came<br />

to a definite determination to make the<br />

law his pr<strong>of</strong>ession and career in life. With<br />

this end in view he entered, at the age<br />

<strong>of</strong> twenty, the law <strong>of</strong>fices <strong>of</strong> Harrison B.<br />

Freeman, continuing his studies until<br />

1903, when he was admitted to the <strong>Connecticut</strong><br />

bar. Since that time, Mr. Dunning<br />

has practiced his pr<strong>of</strong>ession in Hart-<br />

ford and has won enviable reputation as<br />

an attorney <strong>of</strong> ability, counted as one <strong>of</strong><br />

the leaders <strong>of</strong> the Hartford bar. To<br />

natural talent Mr. Dunning has added<br />

habits <strong>of</strong> energy which, combined with<br />

ambition, has won him success. He is<br />

emphatically a worker and there are no<br />

blank periods in his life.<br />

Mr. Dunning, besides his pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

practice has large business interests and<br />

is connected in an <strong>of</strong>ficial capacity with<br />

several important concerns. He is a director<br />

<strong>of</strong> the City Bank & Trust Company,<br />

the Northern <strong>Connecticut</strong> Light<br />

& Power Company, the Thompsonville<br />

Water Company, the Atlas Sand, Gravel<br />

& Stone Company <strong>of</strong> Farmington, the<br />

Northern Engineering Company, the En-<br />

field Construction Company and the In-<br />

surance and Title Guarantee Company <strong>of</strong><br />

Hartford. While in no sense <strong>of</strong> the word<br />

a politician, Mr. Dunning is keenly interested<br />

in public affairs and is a Repub-<br />

lican in politics. He served for five years<br />

on the Common Council and Board <strong>of</strong><br />

Aldermen <strong>of</strong> Hartford and has been chairman<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Town Plan Commission and<br />

member <strong>of</strong> the Republican Town Com-<br />

mittee and various other public bodies in<br />

West Hartford. He is also a prominent<br />

figure in the club life <strong>of</strong> the city, is a<br />

member <strong>of</strong> Wyllys Lodge, No. 99, Ancient<br />

Free and Accepted Masons, <strong>of</strong> West Hart-<br />

ford, but outside <strong>of</strong> his pr<strong>of</strong>ession he finds<br />

his greatest pleasure in his home. He has<br />

a small farm in West Hartford. The<br />

family attend the First Church <strong>of</strong> Christ,<br />

Scientist, in Hartford.<br />

Mr. Dunning married, January 25, 1905,<br />

Hazel C. Case, <strong>of</strong> Windsor. They are the<br />

parents <strong>of</strong> John Stewart, born March 9,<br />

1906; Harrison Freeman, born August 12,<br />

1908; Richard Bancr<strong>of</strong>t, born May 21,<br />

1910; Dorothea, born August 14, 1913;<br />

Hazel, born December 9, 1914; Diana,<br />

born April 9, 1916.<br />

BELDEN, Charles Rockwell,<br />

Business Man, Public Official.<br />

Charles Rockwell Belden was one <strong>of</strong><br />

the most prominent and successful men<br />

<strong>of</strong> his day in his native city <strong>of</strong> Hartford,<br />

<strong>Connecticut</strong>, where he was born January<br />

24, 1850. and died March 18, 1902.<br />

The first English ancestor <strong>of</strong> the family<br />

<strong>of</strong> whom there is record was Walter Bayldon,<br />

who married a daughter <strong>of</strong> Thomas<br />

Gargrave, and their son, John Bayldon,<br />

married (second) October 15, 1515, Mary<br />

Copely, daughter <strong>of</strong> Edward Copely, <strong>of</strong><br />

Doncaster, Yorkshire. He died Decem-<br />
