Captain Samuel Churchill, third son <strong>of</strong><br />

Captain Charles and Lydia (Belden)<br />

Churchill, was born April 15, 1757, in<br />

Newington Parish, baptized the next day,<br />

was a farmer, living opposite his father,<br />

was a man <strong>of</strong> great piety, and died December<br />

10, 1834. He married, July 16,<br />

1778, Mercy Boardman, born August 2,<br />

1757, in Rocky Hill, died January 24,<br />

1834, daughter <strong>of</strong> Jonathan and Martha<br />

(Cole) Boardman. Jonathan Boardman<br />

was a soldier <strong>of</strong> the French War, descended<br />

from Samuel Boardman, who<br />

was baptized August 20, 1615, in Ban-<br />

bury, Oxfordshire, England, was in Ips-<br />

wich, Massachusetts, in 1639, and settled<br />

at Wethersfield in 1641. He married<br />

Mary Betts, daughter <strong>of</strong> John and Mary<br />

Betts, <strong>of</strong> Claydon, Oxfordshire. He was<br />

descended from William Boreman, <strong>of</strong><br />

Banbury, born 1525, father <strong>of</strong> Thomas<br />

Boreman, <strong>of</strong> Claydon, born 1546, died<br />

1579, whose son, Thomas Boreman, married,<br />

in 1580, Dorothy Gregory. Their<br />

son, Christopher Boardman, was born<br />

1581, died 1640, married Julia, daughter <strong>of</strong><br />

Felix Carter, and they were the parents<br />

<strong>of</strong> Samuel Boardman, the pioneer <strong>of</strong><br />

Wethersfield. His son, Jonathan Boardman,<br />

born February 4, 1660, was a prom-<br />

inent citizen <strong>of</strong> Wethersfield, married,<br />

October 22, 1685, Mercy, daughter <strong>of</strong><br />

John and Mary (Merriam) Hubbard, <strong>of</strong><br />

Hatfield, Massachusetts, granddaughter<br />

<strong>of</strong> George Hubbard, early in Wethersfield.<br />

Mercy Hubbard was born February<br />

23, 1664. Her son, Jonathan Boardman,<br />

born May 16, 1697, in Wethersfield, was<br />

deacon <strong>of</strong> the church, lieutenant <strong>of</strong> the<br />

militia, married, June 30, 1725, Mabel<br />

Holmes, who was born May 24, 1693, died<br />

November 15, 1741, daughter <strong>of</strong> Jonas<br />

and Sarah Holmes, <strong>of</strong> Wethersfield.<br />

Samuel Churchill, was born December 4,<br />

1779, baptized on the 17th in Newington,<br />

where he passed his life, and died July 9,<br />

1857. He married, March 31, 1806, Ce-<br />

linda Hurlburt, <strong>of</strong> Portland, <strong>Connecticut</strong>,<br />

who was born January 12, 1786, and died<br />

November 27, 1863.<br />

Their youngest child, Samuel Seymour<br />

Churchill, was born February 28. 1825,<br />

on the home farm in Newington, where<br />

he was a farmer, and died April 2, 1900.<br />

He married, November 11, 1846, Louisa<br />

Hunt, <strong>of</strong> Vernon, <strong>Connecticut</strong>, who died<br />

September 19, 1894.<br />

George Edward Churchill, son <strong>of</strong> Samuel<br />

Seymour and Louisa (Hunt) Church-<br />

ill was born December 11, 1858, on the<br />

farm where he now resides, in the same<br />

house where his father was born, and on the<br />

same farm which was tilled by his father.<br />

In boyhood he attended the public schools<br />

<strong>of</strong> Newington, and also pursued his stud-<br />

ies at home, having been born with a<br />

thirst for knowledge and having ambition<br />

to improve his mind. From 1880 to 1884<br />

he taught school in the old Bell School<br />

House in Newington, which was burned<br />

in 1888. Since 1884 Mr. Churchill has<br />

devoted his time to agriculture and to the<br />

public service. Since his father's death<br />

he has occupied the paternal homestead,<br />

on which he erected his present residence<br />

and various modern farm buildings. He<br />

is an active member <strong>of</strong> the Congregational<br />

church <strong>of</strong> Newington, and has been<br />

for some time president <strong>of</strong> the Christian<br />

Endeavor Society connected therewith.<br />

He is a man <strong>of</strong> the highest character, <strong>of</strong><br />

genial nature, and friendly manners, and<br />

enjoys the esteem and friendship <strong>of</strong> all<br />

his contemporaries. He is the friend <strong>of</strong><br />

good government, acts with the Republi-<br />

can party, and has been chosen to fill<br />

various <strong>of</strong>fices <strong>of</strong> trust and responsibility.<br />

For some time he served as a member <strong>of</strong><br />

the School Board, Board <strong>of</strong> Visitors, as
