general welfare. In 1916 he purchased a<br />
lot <strong>of</strong> eighty feet frontage on Concord<br />
street, West Hartford, on which he<br />
erected a handsome residence which he<br />
occupied October 1, <strong>of</strong> that year. Mr.<br />
Smith has taken little part in political<br />
movements, though he entertains well<br />
grounded principles, being somewhat independent<br />
in politics with Democratic<br />
sympathies. He has served as a member<br />
<strong>of</strong> the City Council from the Third Ward,<br />
and enjoys the confidence and esteem <strong>of</strong><br />
his contemporaries.<br />
Mr. Smith married, October 8, 1884,<br />
Harriet Seymour Cutler, <strong>of</strong> Hartford, a<br />
native <strong>of</strong> that city, daughter <strong>of</strong> William<br />
and Mary (Eaton) Cutler. They are the<br />
parents <strong>of</strong> two children : Charles McLean<br />
and Lucy Marguerite Smith. Mrs. Smith<br />
is a member <strong>of</strong> the Daughters <strong>of</strong> the<br />
American Revolution.<br />

Edward Griswold, the immigrant ancestor,<br />
was born in Warwickshire, Eng-<br />
land, in 1607. He had four brothers:<br />
Thomas, who remained in England<br />
Francis, who settled in Cambridge, Mas-<br />
sachusetts; Michael, who settled in<br />
Wethersfield, <strong>Connecticut</strong>; and Matthew,<br />
who settled in Windsor, <strong>Connecticut</strong>.<br />
Edward Griswold came first to Massachusetts,<br />
but in 1639 located in Wind-<br />
sor on the Farmington road. He was a<br />
deputy to the General Court in 1658, and<br />
justice <strong>of</strong> the peace before 1663, when<br />
the settlement <strong>of</strong> Killingworth began.<br />
He was one <strong>of</strong> the founders and first settlers<br />
in Killingworth. His first wife was<br />
Ann; his second Elizabeth. Children:<br />

George Griswold, son <strong>of</strong> Edward Gris-<br />
wold, was born in England, about 1632,<br />
and died in Windsor, September 3, 1704.<br />
He and his brother Joseph came into possession<br />
<strong>of</strong> his father's lands at Windsor,<br />
when Edward Griswold went to Killing-<br />
worth. He bought lands also <strong>of</strong> the In-<br />
dians. In 1654 he was admitted a freeman.<br />
He was a highly respected citizen<br />
<strong>of</strong> Windsor. He married, at Windsor,<br />
October 3, 1655, Mary Holcomb, who<br />
died April 4, 1708, daughter <strong>of</strong> Thomas<br />
Holcomb. Children, born at Windsor:<br />

Daniel Griswold, son <strong>of</strong> George Gris-<br />
wold, was born at Windsor, October 1,<br />
1656, and died there December 31, 1728.<br />
He married there, February 3, 1680,<br />
Mindwell Bissell, daughter <strong>of</strong> Nathaniel<br />
Bissell. Children, born at Windsor: Dan-<br />
iel, born February 14, 1684; Nathaniel,<br />
twin <strong>of</strong> Daniel, mentioned below ; Pela-<br />
tiah, September 13, 1689; Mary, 1692;<br />

Ensign Nathaniel Griswold, son <strong>of</strong><br />
Daniel Griswold, was born at Windsor,<br />
February 14, 1684, and married there, in<br />
1 73 1, Ruth Gaylord. He settled in Poquonock,<br />
and died there September 16,<br />
1753. Children, born at Windsor: Ruth,<br />
born August 8, 1732; Naomi, April 5,<br />
1735; Azubah, July 14, 1736; Nathaniel,<br />
