coal company, conducting a wholesale<br />

and retail business ; Mr. Belden is affiliat-<br />

ed with the same Masonic Lodge as his<br />

father was, St. John's Lodge, No. 4,<br />

Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, <strong>of</strong><br />

Hartford ; the Wolcott Council, Royal<br />

Arch Masons; the Hartford, Hart-<br />

ford Golf, Farmington Country, East<br />

Haddam Fish & Game and The Twentieth<br />

Century clubs ; he is also a member<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Hartford Employer's Association<br />

; an adherent <strong>of</strong> the Republican<br />

party, but in no sense <strong>of</strong> the word a<br />

politician ; Mr. Belden married Sydney B.,<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> Stephen Hanson, <strong>of</strong> Philadelphia,<br />

Pennsylvania, and they have two<br />

children, Kathleen and Ruth. 2. Caroline,<br />

became the wife <strong>of</strong> James E. Brooks,<br />

and they are residents <strong>of</strong> Orange, New<br />

Jersey. 3. Louise M., became the wife<br />

<strong>of</strong> William C. Hill, residing in Sunbury,<br />

Pennsylvania.<br />

ULRICH, George,<br />

Banker, Public Official.<br />

A descendant <strong>of</strong> an old and honorable<br />

family, who have furnished many eminent<br />

men to different nations, George<br />

Ulrich, was born in New York, August<br />

13, 1856, the youngest son <strong>of</strong> Conrad and<br />

Margaret (Viel) Ulrich. The Ulrich<br />

family is <strong>of</strong> very acient origin. One<br />

branch <strong>of</strong> this family settled in Bale,<br />

Switzerland, and another in Alsace,<br />

France. The founder and defender <strong>of</strong> the<br />

famous Chateau St. Ulrich, General Ul-<br />

rich, who defended Strassburg against<br />

the Germans in 1870, belonged to the<br />

Alsatian branch, and the present commander<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Swiss Army (1917) is a<br />

descendant <strong>of</strong> the Bale branch. The<br />

coat-<strong>of</strong>-arms <strong>of</strong> the Ulrich family was<br />

granted in 873 A. D., and is as follows:<br />

Argent and or, in chief a vulture proper in the<br />

attitude <strong>of</strong> the heraldic eagle, wings inverted, in<br />

Conrad Ulrich came from Cassel in<br />

185 1. The city is one <strong>of</strong> the handsomest<br />

in Germany, and is noted for the manu-<br />

facture <strong>of</strong> mathematical and physical in-<br />

struments. Mr. Ulrich followed his trade<br />

as instrument and tool maker for many<br />

years. He married Margaret Viel,<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> the Rev. Peter Viel, and<br />

ganddaughter <strong>of</strong> Pastor Stamm. They<br />

were the parents <strong>of</strong> five sons and two<br />

daughters.<br />

George Ulrich, the youngest son <strong>of</strong><br />

Conrad and Margaret (Viel) Ulrich, was<br />

born in New York, August 13, 1856.<br />

When a boy he removed to Hartford<br />

with his parents. After passing through<br />

the various grade schools, he took a<br />

special course at Bonn, where he re-<br />

ceived his degree <strong>of</strong> B. A. Afterwards<br />

he entered the banking business, which<br />

has been practically his life's vocation.<br />

Mr. Ulrich, accompanied by his wife,<br />

spent three years in foreign travel and<br />

visited practically every country on the<br />

Globe. After spending two more years<br />

in this manner, they made an extensive<br />

tour <strong>of</strong> their own country. Mr.<br />

Ulrich then returned to business life, with<br />

the broadminded vision and experience<br />

travel alone can give. In 1912 he was<br />

appointed vice-president <strong>of</strong> the newly<br />

formed American Industrial Bank &<br />

Trust Company, an <strong>of</strong>fice he is now ably<br />

filling. In political affiliations Mr. Ulrich<br />

is a Democrat, and has for many<br />

years been active in the party and in-<br />

fluential in its councils. For years he<br />

served as selectman <strong>of</strong> the town <strong>of</strong> Hartford,<br />

and was for twelve years a member<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Fire Commissioners,<br />

a member <strong>of</strong> both branches <strong>of</strong> the City
