He married (first) Amy Butler, who died<br />

February 16, 1763, daughter <strong>of</strong> Thomas<br />

Butler, <strong>of</strong> Hartford. He married (second),<br />

November 24, 1763, Hannah (Thrall)<br />

Hickox, who died August 2^, 1779. He<br />

was a farmer in Simsbury. He was commissioned<br />

captain in October, 1736, <strong>of</strong><br />

August 31, 1755, Mary Dyer, who<br />

died October 21, 1775, daughter <strong>of</strong> Benjamin<br />

Dyer. He married (third) June 2,<br />

1776, Charity Pettibone, born June 30,<br />

1744, died October 5, 1803. His widow<br />

married, June 14, 1799, Dr. Amasa Case.<br />

(VI) Colonel James (5) Cornish, son<br />

<strong>of</strong> Captain James (4) and Ruhamah (Bid-<br />

well) Cornish, was born in 1776, died<br />

January 20, 1836. He was a farmer in<br />

Simsbury. He was active in the militia<br />

and rose to the rank <strong>of</strong> colonel <strong>of</strong> his<br />

regiment. He married (first) Cynthia<br />

Russell, born October 14, 1778, died Au-<br />

gust 5, 1824, daughter <strong>of</strong> Sergeant Jesse<br />

and Sarah (Cornish) Russell, granddaughter<br />

<strong>of</strong> Daniel and Mindwell (Bunce)<br />

Cornish, great-granddaughter <strong>of</strong> cap-<br />

tain James Cornish, mentioned above.<br />

He married (second) Elizabeth Smith,<br />

widow, who survived him. Children:<br />

February 20, 1804; Charles Edwin, men-<br />

tioned below; James Darwin, May, 1808;<br />

(VII) Major Charles Edwin Cornish,<br />

son <strong>of</strong> Colonel James (5) Cornish, was<br />

born at Simsbury, April 13, 1805, died<br />

February 14, 1882. He lived at Glastonbury.<br />

He was for many years prominent<br />

in the militia, and an excellent <strong>of</strong>ficer, <strong>of</strong><br />

fine presence and a strict disciplinarian.<br />

He married Mary N. Vining, born September<br />

10, 1810, died May 11, 1873,<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> Thomas Vining. Child,<br />

Jeanette Cynthia, born June 11, 1835,<br />

married (first) Henry L. Pratt, February<br />

12, 1856, (second), August 2, 1863, George<br />

Franklin Tolles, <strong>of</strong> Hartford (see Tolles).<br />
