John Welles, son <strong>of</strong> Governor Thomas<br />
Welles, born about 162 1, removed to<br />
Stratford, <strong>Connecticut</strong>, and was admitted<br />
freeman by the General Court, April 20,<br />
1645. I n l ^S^~57' ne was deputy to the<br />
General Court, was a magistrate in 1658-<br />
59, and died August 7, 1659. He married,<br />
in 1647, Elizabeth Bourne, undoubtedly a<br />
daughter <strong>of</strong> John Bourne, who was early<br />
in Wethersfield, later at Middletown,<br />
<strong>Connecticut</strong>. She married (second) in<br />
March, 1663, John Wilcoxson, <strong>of</strong> Strat-<br />
ford.<br />
Robert Welles, third son <strong>of</strong> John and<br />
Elizabeth Welles, was born in 165 1, and<br />
was committed by his father to the care<br />
<strong>of</strong> his paternal grandfather. Governor<br />
Welles, who made him his heir and reared<br />
and educated him in Wethersfield. He<br />
was made a freeman in October, 1661 ;<br />
was captain <strong>of</strong> the train band at the north<br />
end <strong>of</strong> Wethersfield, in September, 1689<br />
was deputy 1690-91-92-93-94, 1697-98-99-<br />
1700-01, in 1705, 1707-08-09-10-11-12-13-<br />
14. He also served as commissioner, jus-<br />
tice <strong>of</strong> the peace, and member <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Council, and died June 22, 1714. His<br />
house was one <strong>of</strong> those fortified for pro-<br />
tection against Indian attacks in 1704.<br />
He married, June 9, 1675, Elizabeth Good-<br />
rich, born 1658, died February 17, 1698,<br />
daughter <strong>of</strong> William and Sarah (Marvin)<br />
Goodrich.<br />
Captain Robert (2) Welles, son <strong>of</strong> Captain<br />
Robert (1) Welles, was born about<br />

1684, in Wethersfield, and was among the<br />
foremost citizens <strong>of</strong> that place in public<br />
affairs, and in church and school matters.<br />
He was appointed lieutenant <strong>of</strong> Hartford<br />
Dragoons in October, 1714, captain in<br />
1726, and died before September 14, 1738,<br />
when the inventory <strong>of</strong> his property was<br />
made. This amounted to £4708-15^ including<br />
much silver, a silver hilted sword<br />
and fine wardrobe and furniture. He mar-<br />
ried, December 12, 1706, Sarah Wolcott,<br />
<strong>of</strong> Wethersfield, daughter <strong>of</strong> Samuel and<br />
Judith (Appelton) Wolcott, last named a<br />
daughter <strong>of</strong> Worshipful Samuel Appelton,<br />
<strong>of</strong> Ipswich, Massachusetts, <strong>of</strong> whom<br />
there is further mention elsewhere in this<br />
work.<br />
Hezekiah Welles, son <strong>of</strong> Captain Robert<br />
(2) and Sarah (Wolcott) Welles, was<br />
born December 9, 1725, and inherited<br />
from his father lands which the latter had<br />
purchased from Judith Wolcott. Hezekiah<br />
Welles was captain <strong>of</strong> the Wethersfield<br />
Company in the Revolution, which<br />
served at Boston from January to March,<br />
1776; also commanded a company in New<br />
Haven in 1779, and in 1780 a company <strong>of</strong><br />
the Sixth <strong>Connecticut</strong> Militia. He died<br />
October 1, 1804. On December 17, 1747,<br />
he married Mary Boardman, born March<br />
3, 1727, died May 23, 1786, daughter <strong>of</strong><br />
Joseph and Mary (Belden) Boardman.<br />
Hezekiah (2) Welles, fourth son <strong>of</strong><br />
Hezekiah (1) Welles, born September 20,<br />
1770, baptized three days later, lived in<br />
Wethersfield, and died July 1, 1809. He<br />
married there, October 7, 1798, Hannah<br />
Welles, born September 11, 1776, daugh-<br />
ter <strong>of</strong> Major Chester and Hannah (Bel-<br />
den) Welles, <strong>of</strong> Wethersfield. Their<br />
third child, Hannah Belden Welles, born<br />
December 4, 1804, was married in New<br />
Orleans, 1840, to William Anderson, and<br />
became the mother <strong>of</strong> James Reed Ander-<br />
son.<br />
