secretary <strong>of</strong> the colony from 1658 to 1664.<br />
He married, June 13, 1644, Mary Newberry,<br />
who died October 29, 1688. She<br />
was a daughter <strong>of</strong> Thomas Newberry,<br />
who came from England and died in Dorchester,<br />
as he was preparing to remove<br />
to Windsor. His widow, Jane, married<br />
(second) Rev. John Warham, the first<br />
pastor at Windsor, and removed thither<br />
with her children. Her third son, John<br />
Newberry, born April 10, 1656, was admitted<br />
an inhabitant <strong>of</strong> Simsbury, December<br />
24, 1686, and died there in February,<br />
1715. lie married, in 1685, Mary, daughter<br />
<strong>of</strong> Christopher and Mary (Burr) Crow,<br />
born 1665. She married (second) about<br />
1720. William Randall, <strong>of</strong> Enfield. Chris-<br />
topher Crow lived first in Hartford, later<br />
in Windsor, and again in Hartford. His<br />
father, Benjamin Crow, was one <strong>of</strong> the<br />
founders <strong>of</strong> Hartford, one <strong>of</strong> the original<br />
proprietors in 1635, and a soldier <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Pequot War.<br />
Jonah Gillett, the posthumous son <strong>of</strong><br />
Thomas Gillett, was born October 18,<br />
1708, in Simsbury, and resided in what<br />
was called Wintonbury Parish <strong>of</strong> Windsor,<br />
now the town <strong>of</strong> Bloomfield, and was<br />
sergeant <strong>of</strong> militia. He married Elizabeth<br />
Hoskins, born 1708-09, died May 28, 1758,<br />
and several <strong>of</strong> their children were baptized<br />
in Wintonbury.<br />
Their eldest child. Captain Jonah<br />
Gillett, was born about 1728-29 in Bloomfield,<br />
and was a soldier <strong>of</strong> the Revolution<br />
in command <strong>of</strong> the Second Company <strong>of</strong><br />
the Second Battalion in Colonel Gay's<br />
regiment in 1776. This regiment was<br />
raised to reinforce General Washington's<br />
army at New York, and participated in<br />
the movements on Long Island and at<br />
White Plains. He died March 14, 1792,<br />
in Bloomfield. He was married, Novem-<br />
ber 9, 1752, by the Rev. Hezekiah Bissel,<br />
first pastor <strong>of</strong> the church at W'intonbury,<br />

to Sarah Goodrich, who was born October<br />
31, 1733, in Windsor, daughter <strong>of</strong> Jacob<br />
and Benedicta (Goodwin) Goodrich, descended<br />
from William and Sarah (Mar-<br />
vin) Goodrich, who were early in<br />
Wethersfield. Their son, John Goodrich,<br />
born May 20, 1653, lived in Wethersfield,<br />
and married, March 28, 1678, Rebecca,<br />
daughter <strong>of</strong> Captain John Allyn, <strong>of</strong><br />
Charlestown, Massachusetts, born in February,<br />
1660. Their youngest child was<br />
Jacob Goodrich, born November 27, 1694,<br />
and lived in Wethersfield and Windsor,<br />
and died May 11, 1746. He married, September<br />
12, 1717, Benedicta Goodwin,<br />
daughter <strong>of</strong> Nathaniel and Mehitable<br />
(Porter) Goodwin. Their fourth daughter,<br />
Sarah Goodrich, born in 1733, became<br />
the wife <strong>of</strong> Captain Jonah Gillett, as above<br />
noted. She was also a descendant <strong>of</strong><br />
Ozias Goodwin, the ancestor <strong>of</strong> all <strong>of</strong> that<br />
name in the vicinity <strong>of</strong> Hartford, and<br />
his wife, Mary (Woodward) Goodwin,<br />
the daughter <strong>of</strong> Robert Woodward, <strong>of</strong><br />
England. Ozias Goodwin and wife were<br />
residing in Hartford as early as 1639, and<br />
there he died before April, 1683. His<br />
son, William Goodwin, was born about<br />
1629, and died October 15, 1689, an d mar-<br />
ried Susanna Fruen. Their second son,<br />
Nathaniel Goodwin, was a shoemaker,<br />
deacon <strong>of</strong> the First Church <strong>of</strong> Hartford,<br />
and died in November, 1747. He married<br />
Mehitable Porter, born September 15,<br />
1673, daughter <strong>of</strong> Samuel and Hannah<br />
(Stanley) Porter, <strong>of</strong> Hadley, Massachusetts<br />
; she was the granddaughter <strong>of</strong> John<br />
Porter, who came from Felsted, County<br />
Essex, England, and was in Windsor as<br />
early as 1639. He married, October 18,<br />
1620, Anna White, <strong>of</strong> Messing, England,<br />
baptized July 3, 1600, daughter <strong>of</strong> Robert<br />
and Bridget (Allgar) White. The latter<br />
was a daughter <strong>of</strong> William Allgar, <strong>of</strong><br />
