son, was born about 1520. He was a<br />

resident <strong>of</strong> Methley in 1567 and <strong>of</strong> Hardwick<br />

in 1574. He died in 1588, and was<br />

buried at Kippax. He married Anne,<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> Thomas and Jane (Pigot)<br />

Folkingham, <strong>of</strong> Leeds, and widow <strong>of</strong><br />

James Standish, <strong>of</strong> Killingholme, in the<br />

County <strong>of</strong> Lincoln. She was buried at<br />

Leeds, December 17, 1577. Sir Francis<br />

Baildon, their son, was born in 1560. He<br />

was knighted at the coronation <strong>of</strong> James<br />

I. He married (second) Margaret, daughter<br />

<strong>of</strong> Richard Goodrick, <strong>of</strong> Ripston. She<br />

was buried September 22, 1598. Sir<br />

Francis died in 1623.<br />

Richard Baildon, son <strong>of</strong> Sir Francis<br />

Baildon, was baptized at Kippax, May 26,<br />

1 591. He emigrated to America with his<br />

sons, his wife having died in England, and<br />

came to Wethersfield when about fortyeight<br />

or fifty years <strong>of</strong> age, in 1641. He<br />

accumulated considerable real estate<br />

which was bequeathed to his sons upon<br />

his death, which occurred in 1655. He<br />

was a man <strong>of</strong> keen financial ability and<br />

possessed <strong>of</strong> a high degree <strong>of</strong> moral and<br />

intellectual force which has been apparent<br />

among his descendants throughout the<br />

centuries. In 1646 he was appointed<br />

town cow-keeper, whose duties were to<br />

look after the settlers' cattle pastured in<br />

the town pasture.<br />

John Belden, youngest son <strong>of</strong> Richard<br />

Baildon, was born about 1631, and accompanied<br />

his father to America. He<br />

was made a freeman in Wethersfield in<br />

1657. That same year he enlisted under<br />

Captain John Mason. He was very active<br />

in town affairs. He left an estate valued<br />

at nine hundred and eleven pounds at his<br />

death, June ij, 1677. He married, April<br />

24, 1657, Lydia, daughter <strong>of</strong> Thomas and<br />

Susanna Standish.<br />

Samuel Belden, son <strong>of</strong> John Belden,<br />

was born January 3, 1665, and died December<br />

27, 1738. He married, January<br />

14, 1685, Hannah, daughter <strong>of</strong> Richard<br />

Handy, and granddaughter <strong>of</strong> John Elder-<br />

kin, a first settler <strong>of</strong> Norwich. She died<br />

January 20, 1742.<br />

Samuel (2) Belden, son <strong>of</strong> Samuel<br />

(1) Belden, was born in 1689, and died<br />

July 31, 1771. He married, April 10, 1712,<br />

Mary Spencer, <strong>of</strong> Haddam, <strong>Connecticut</strong>,<br />

who died October 28, 175 1, at the age <strong>of</strong><br />

sixty years.<br />

Samuel (3) Belden, son <strong>of</strong> Samuel (2)<br />

and Mary (Spencer) Belden, was born<br />

April 26, 1713, and lived in Stepney<br />

parish. He died January 10. 1789. His<br />

wife, Elizabeth Belden, died February 23,<br />

i/75- .<br />

Seth Belden, son <strong>of</strong> Samuel (3) Belden,<br />

was born August 7, 1747, and was killed<br />

August 2y, 1776, at the battle <strong>of</strong> Long<br />

Island, in which he participated as a<br />

private in Colonel Huntington's regi-<br />

ment. He married, April 16, 1772, in<br />

Wethersfield, for his second wife, Christian<br />

Dickinson, who was born Novem-<br />

ber 29, 1755, and died August 9, 1844,<br />

at the age <strong>of</strong> eighty-nine years, daughter<br />

<strong>of</strong> Obediah and Mary (Collins) Dickin-<br />

son, <strong>of</strong> Wethersfield. After the death<br />

<strong>of</strong> her husband, Mrs. Belden removed<br />

with her children to Middletown Upper<br />

Houses, now Cromwell.<br />

Seth (2) Belden, son <strong>of</strong> Seth (1) and<br />

Christian (Dickinson) Belden, was born<br />

in Wethersfield, <strong>Connecticut</strong>. After his<br />

father's death he went with his mother<br />

and the other children to Cromwell to<br />

live, and remained there until he removed<br />

to Hartford, <strong>Connecticut</strong>. Mr. Belden<br />

engaged in the paving stone business and<br />

general contracting and was very success-<br />

ful in his line <strong>of</strong> work. He married Abigail<br />

Sophia, daughter <strong>of</strong> Steadman.<br />

(2) and Abigail Sophia (Steadman)<br />

Belden, attended the public schools <strong>of</strong><br />

Hartford, which are widely known for
