thaniel Griswold, was born at Windsor,<br />
July 27, 1742. He resided at Poquonock,<br />
in that town. He was a soldier in the<br />
Revolution in Captain David Barber's<br />
company from Windsor, in the first regiment,<br />
sergeant in the eighth company.<br />
His wife Abigail died April 26, 1820, aged<br />
seventy-three years, at Windsor. Children,<br />
born in Windsor: Friend, mentioned<br />
below; Agnes, baptized Septem-<br />
ber 29, 1765 ; George ; and Tirzah, died<br />
January II, 1771, aged three days.<br />
Friend Griswold, son <strong>of</strong> Nathaniel<br />
Griswold was born in Windsor, and baptized<br />
June io, 1764. He died February<br />
4, 1831, aged sixty-seven, according to<br />
family records. By his wife Dolly he<br />
had children : Altissa, Bridgman, men-<br />
tioned below; Bradford, who died in<br />
Windsor, September 3, 1855, aged fifty-<br />
nine years.<br />
Bridgman Griswold, son <strong>of</strong> Friend<br />
Griswold, was born in 1791, and died at<br />
Windsor, October 9, 1836, aged forty-five<br />
years. He married (first) Hannah Holcomb,<br />
who died August 4, 1829, aged<br />
thirty-nine years. He married (sec-<br />
ond) Maria Holcomb. Children by first<br />

Charles Griswold, son <strong>of</strong> Bridgman<br />
Griswold, was born in 1821, at Windsor<br />
(Poquonock) and died at Hartford, Oc-<br />
tober 7, 1910, aged eighty-nine years.<br />
During his youth he resided on his fath-<br />
er's farm at Popuonock, a village <strong>of</strong><br />
Windsor. He learned the carpenter's<br />
trade and became a builder and contrac-<br />
tor. Later, however, he engaged in business<br />
as a general merchant. He went<br />
West just before the Civil War and re-<br />
ceived a government grant at Brodhead,<br />
Wisconsin, where he opened a general<br />

store and also followed farming, until<br />
1865, when he returned to Hartford.<br />
From that time until he was seventy years<br />
old, he was in business as a contractor in<br />
Hartford, where he died. In politics he<br />
was a Democrat. In religion he was an<br />
Episcopalian. He joined the Independent<br />
Order <strong>of</strong> Odd Fellows while in Wisconsin.<br />

Frank Charles Griswold, son <strong>of</strong> Charles<br />
Griswold, was born in Hartford, Febru-<br />
ary 25, 1855. He attended the public<br />
schools in the towns where his parents<br />
lived during his youth. When he was<br />
fourteen years old, he went to work as<br />
clerk in a retail provision store in Windsor<br />
and was employed there for about<br />
four years. In 1872 he secured a position<br />
as clerk in the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Connecticut</strong><br />
General Life Insurance Company <strong>of</strong> Hart-<br />
ford, and afterwards was an agent for<br />
that company in <strong>Connecticut</strong>; later, due<br />
to his success as an agent, he was promoted<br />
to the position <strong>of</strong> special agent,<br />
traveling and appointing representatives.<br />
In 1897 he was elected an <strong>of</strong>ficer <strong>of</strong> the<br />
company with the title <strong>of</strong> superintendent<br />
<strong>of</strong> agencies, with headquarters at the<br />
home <strong>of</strong>fice, and the rapid development <strong>of</strong><br />
the company is due in a large degree to<br />
his supervision and in the appointment <strong>of</strong><br />
men <strong>of</strong> ability as representatives <strong>of</strong> the<br />
company. He is well known and highly<br />
respected in insurance circles, and his<br />
work has been specially commended by<br />
competent critics. Mr. Griswold is a<br />
member <strong>of</strong> Washington Lodge, No. 70,<br />
Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, <strong>of</strong><br />
Windsor ; <strong>of</strong> Wolcott Council, Royal and<br />
Select Masters ; and Pythagoras Chapter,<br />
Royal Arch Masons, <strong>of</strong> Hartford. He and<br />
his wife are communicants <strong>of</strong> Trinity<br />
Protestant Episcopal Church.
