prises, which proved pr<strong>of</strong>itable to all con-<br />
cerned. He succeeded his brother, Miles<br />
A. Tuttle, as director <strong>of</strong> both the ^Etna<br />
Insurance Company <strong>of</strong> Hartford and the<br />
Farmers' and Mechanics' National Bank<br />
<strong>of</strong> Hartford, and remained on those<br />
boards for thirty-seven years, performing<br />
faithful and efficient service.<br />
In addition to his business interests,<br />
which were many and varied, Mr. Tut-<br />
tle took an active interest in other departments<br />
<strong>of</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> the city, namely, relig-<br />
ious and philanthropic work, in social<br />
circles and in military circles, in all <strong>of</strong><br />
which he was prominent and influential.<br />
He was a member <strong>of</strong> Christ Episcopal<br />
Church <strong>of</strong> Hartford, serving as warden<br />
and vestryman, and a teacher in the Sunday<br />
school. He was a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />
board <strong>of</strong> directors <strong>of</strong> the Hartford Hospital<br />
and the Retreat for the Insane, and<br />
auditor <strong>of</strong> the accounts <strong>of</strong> both these in-<br />
stitutions. He held the rank <strong>of</strong> lieuten-<br />
ant in the Governor's Foot Guard, was a<br />
member <strong>of</strong> the Veteran Association, and<br />
a member <strong>of</strong> the Hartford Volunteer Fire<br />
Department. He was a staunch adher-<br />
ent <strong>of</strong> the principles <strong>of</strong> the Republican<br />
party, but never sought or held public<br />
<strong>of</strong>fice. He was a member <strong>of</strong> the Hartford<br />
Horticultural Society, the <strong>Connecticut</strong><br />
Agricultural Society, the Hartford Club<br />
and the Piscatorious Club <strong>of</strong> Hartford.<br />
He devoted considerable time to the<br />
study <strong>of</strong> history and astronomy ;<br />
his favorite<br />
novelist was Sir Walter Scott and<br />
his favorite poet was James Russell<br />
Lowell.<br />
Mr. Tuttle married, November i, 1838,<br />
Sarah Ramsey, <strong>of</strong> Hartford, a daughter <strong>of</strong><br />
Jonathan and Sarah (Allyn) Ramsey, <strong>of</strong><br />
Hartford, and a descendant <strong>of</strong> Hugh<br />
Ramsay, the pioneer ancestor, who was<br />
a resident <strong>of</strong> Londonderry, New Hamp-<br />

shire, in 1720. As early as the year 1200<br />
the Ramseys or Ramsays were well<br />
known in Scotland, and through various<br />
collateral lines the present members <strong>of</strong><br />
the family can trace their descent from<br />
many <strong>of</strong> the greatest kings <strong>of</strong> antiquity,<br />
both in France and England. The Ramsey<br />
coat-<strong>of</strong>-arms is thus described : An<br />
eagle displayed sable, beaked and membered<br />
gules. Charles on the breast with<br />
an escutcheon <strong>of</strong> the last. Crest : A unicorn's<br />
head couped argent, maned and<br />
honored or. Motto : Spernit pericula vir-<br />
tus.<br />
Mr. and Mrs. Tuttle were the par-<br />
ents <strong>of</strong> four children: Sarah, deceased;<br />
Catherine, deceased; Grace, died Janu-<br />
ary 31, 1883; and Jane, a resident <strong>of</strong><br />
Hartford, where she is a prominent figure<br />
in the Society <strong>of</strong> the Daughters <strong>of</strong> the<br />
American Revolution, and in the <strong>Connecticut</strong><br />
Society <strong>of</strong> the Daughters <strong>of</strong> Found-<br />
ers and Patriots <strong>of</strong> America.<br />

Scott Howard Simon, treasurer and<br />
general manager <strong>of</strong> the Carlyle Johnson<br />
Machine Company, <strong>of</strong> Manchester, Con-<br />
necticut, has made creditable progress in<br />
the business world, and in a short space<br />
<strong>of</strong> time, seeing that he is still in his thirties.<br />
And his advancement is all the more<br />
noteworthy in that it has come by outstanding<br />
merit only. He was born on<br />
November 8, 1879, in Youngstown, Ohio,<br />
the son <strong>of</strong> Frank Fusselman and Lena<br />
Hauser (Hanni) Simon, the former an<br />
agriculturist <strong>of</strong> Poland, Ohio, where he<br />
was born in 1854, and the latter, April<br />
1, 1858, <strong>of</strong> Flint Hill, suburb <strong>of</strong> Young-<br />
town, Ohio. Scott Howard Simon is the<br />
eldest <strong>of</strong> four children born to his par-<br />
ents, the others <strong>of</strong> his generation being:<br />
