instincts, inherited from worthy<br />
ancestors, he is a true gentleman <strong>of</strong> the<br />
old school. He is descended from some<br />
<strong>of</strong> the best families <strong>of</strong> Ireland, one <strong>of</strong> his<br />
ancestors being Lord O'Ryan. Mr. Ryan<br />
is the ideal landlord. A man <strong>of</strong> most<br />
kindly nature and genial manners, he<br />
makes all his guests feel at home and is<br />
ever striving to satisfy their desires and<br />
render the best possible service. He has<br />
long been identified with the Masonic fraternity,<br />
and is affiliated with Washington<br />
Commandery, No. i, Knights Templar, <strong>of</strong><br />
Hartford. He is also a member <strong>of</strong> Hart-<br />
ford Lodge, No. 19, Benevolent and Pro-<br />
tective Order <strong>of</strong> Elks, and is affiliated<br />
with Social Lodge, No. 162, Independent<br />
Order <strong>of</strong> Odd Fellows, <strong>of</strong> Orange, Massachusetts.<br />
He married, at Orange, Cora<br />
Isola Rand, born October 24, 1854, in<br />
Wendell, Massachusetts, daughter <strong>of</strong><br />
Stanford Holbrook and Mary H. (Putnam)<br />
Rand, <strong>of</strong> that town. Mr. and Mrs.<br />
Ryan had one child which died at the<br />
age <strong>of</strong> six months.<br />
Rand is a name which signifies a border<br />
or margin. It first appears as a patronymic<br />
in England early in the fifteenth cen-<br />
tury, and the name is found in records<br />
as early as 1633; in Kent, in 1600; in<br />
Durham in 1578. There were three immigrants<br />
who came very early to New Eng-<br />
land. One settled in Plymouth in 1623,<br />
and another in New Hampshire. Rob-<br />
ert Rand came from England about 1635,<br />
and his wife Alice, located in Charles-<br />
town, where they were admitted to the<br />
church in that year. In 1638 he owned a<br />
house on the west side <strong>of</strong> Wind Mill Hill,<br />
sixty-six acres <strong>of</strong> land and a share in<br />
"The Commons." Soon after this he died,<br />
perhaps at Lynn, where he lived for a<br />
time. His son, Thomas Rand, in con-<br />
junction with the latter's mother Alice,<br />

had a grant <strong>of</strong> thirty-four acres in 1658.<br />
He was born about 1627, in England, and<br />
died at Charlestown, August 4, 1683. He<br />
married, March 25, 1656, Sarah Edenden,<br />
born about 1636, died June 26, 1699,<br />
daughter <strong>of</strong> Edmund and Eliza (Whitman)<br />
Edenden. His second son, John<br />
Rand, born April 25, 1664, was a malster,<br />
and died September 24, 1737. He<br />
married, December 2, 1685, Mehitable<br />
Call, daughter <strong>of</strong> John and Hannah (Kettell)<br />
Call. She died March 25, 1727. Her<br />
youngest child, Richard Rand, was born<br />
November 19, 1714, and died before September<br />
1, 1746, when his widow was made<br />
administratrix <strong>of</strong> his estate. He married,<br />
June 16, 1736, Mary Davis, baptized June<br />
23, 1717, daughter <strong>of</strong> Zachariah and Mildred<br />
(Brizden) Davis. Their only son,<br />
Richard Rand, baptized September 15,<br />
1743, settled in Vermont, first in Newfane,<br />
whence he removed in February,<br />
1 801, to Wardsboro, and there died July<br />
27, 1808. He married, April 20, 1768, Re-<br />
lief Sawyer, born December 30, 1747, in<br />
Sterling, Massachusetts, died July 31,<br />
1814, daughter <strong>of</strong> Abner and Mary<br />
(Wilder) Sawyer. Their eldest child,<br />
Luke Sawyer Rand, born March 30, 1769,<br />
was a builder <strong>of</strong> bridges and canal locks,<br />
a noted engineer <strong>of</strong> his time, and died December<br />
18, 1854, in Townshend, Vermont.<br />
He married, July 31, 1794, Abigail Daven-<br />
port, born December 17, 1772, in Peter-<br />
sham, Massachusetts, died September 13,<br />
1843. Her third son, Chester Rand, born<br />
March 26, 1798, died after 1867, in which<br />
year his golden wedding was celebrated.<br />
He married, July 16, 1817, Patty Osgood,<br />
and their eldest son, Stanford Holbrook<br />
Rand, born December 18, 1825, married,<br />
February 1, 1852, Mary H. Putnam, born<br />
September 7, 1833, daughter <strong>of</strong> Captain<br />
William Putnam, <strong>of</strong> Wendell, Massachu-<br />
