Mr. Griswold is keenly interested in<br />

public affairs, and has given active and<br />

appreciated allegiance to the Republican<br />

party. He has held local, judicial and<br />

administrative <strong>of</strong>fice ; was justice <strong>of</strong> the<br />

peace, and for over twenty years has<br />

been a member <strong>of</strong> the town school committee<br />

in Wethersfield. <strong>of</strong> which body he<br />

is now chairman. His personality, as<br />

well as his capability in public <strong>of</strong>fice, was<br />

in recent years made evident by his elec-<br />

tion to and activities at the State Legis-<br />

lature in 1913. He was a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />

committee on insurance, and was chairman<br />

<strong>of</strong> the new towns and probate dis-<br />

tricts committee. Socially, Mr. Griswold<br />

is a member <strong>of</strong> the Hartford Club, <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Wethersfield Country Club, <strong>of</strong> which organization<br />

he is president ; also member<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Hartford Chamber <strong>of</strong> Commerce.<br />

Thomas Stanley, born in Farmington,<br />

November 27, 1720, married (first), May<br />

22, 1740, Mary, daughter <strong>of</strong> James and<br />

Elizabeth (Howard) Francis. James<br />

Francis was born in Wethersfield, October<br />

13, 1685; married (first) November<br />

3, 1713, Elizabeth Howard, who died<br />

April 13, 1728; resided at Berlin, Con-<br />

necticut, where he farmed. His father,<br />

John Francis, was born in Wethersfield,<br />

September 4, 1658; married (first) February<br />

10, 1680, Sarah Dix, who was born<br />

in 1658, and died April 3, 1682; served<br />

as sergeant in Colonial army, but main<br />

occupation that <strong>of</strong> farming. He died December<br />

28, 171 1. His father, Robert<br />

Francis, was born in 1629, probably in<br />

England ; married, about 1650, Joan<br />

, who<br />

died January 29, 1705, aged<br />

seventy-six years. The records <strong>of</strong> the<br />

town <strong>of</strong> Wethersfield authenticate the<br />

admission <strong>of</strong> Robert Francis to rank <strong>of</strong><br />

freeman <strong>of</strong> the settlement in 1645. Rec-<br />

ord also is extant <strong>of</strong> purchase by him <strong>of</strong><br />

a tract <strong>of</strong> land on March 29, 1652, which<br />

land he farmed. He was a prominent<br />

member <strong>of</strong> the Congregational church.<br />

He attained the age <strong>of</strong> eighty-three, his<br />

demise occurring on January 2, 1712.<br />

Thomas Stanley, who married Mary<br />

Francis, was the son <strong>of</strong> Thomas Stanley.<br />

The latter was born in Farmington, Octo-<br />

ber 31, 1696; married, January 2, 1718,<br />

Esther, daughter <strong>of</strong> Samuel Cowles, <strong>of</strong><br />

Kensington. He lived in Stanley Quarter,<br />

New Britain, 'and was reputed wealthy.<br />

He died October 13, 1755, aged sixtynine,<br />

his wife surviving him for more<br />

than twenty years, her death occurring<br />

on July 22, 1776.<br />

His father, Thomas Stanley, was born<br />

in Farmington, November 1, 1649. He<br />

was one <strong>of</strong> the petitioners to the General<br />

Court for liberty to settle Waterbury,<br />

but he did not remove there. On May 1,<br />

1690, he married Anna, daughter <strong>of</strong> Rev.
