This course aims to develop understanding<br />

<strong>of</strong> the culture, literature and civilization <strong>of</strong><br />

France. Representative readings from different<br />

periods. Lectures, discussions and<br />

Overview <strong>of</strong> the spoken and written<br />

language <strong>of</strong> the French business world.<br />

Formalities and conventions <strong>of</strong> letter writing,<br />

banking, import/ export, and other<br />

commercial transactions. Analysis <strong>of</strong> terminology<br />

from business-related areas such<br />

as finance, insurance and international<br />

commerce within a contemporary cultural<br />

setting.<br />

French Literature<br />

An introduction to the principal literary<br />

genres <strong>of</strong> poetry, novel, short story,<br />

essay and drama, through analysis <strong>of</strong> representative<br />

works in the French tradition.<br />

Strongly recommended as a prerequisite<br />

for all upper-division literature courses in<br />

French.
