MISSION STATEMENT<br />

<strong>The</strong> Mission <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> Kania School <strong>of</strong> Management is to contribute to a Jesuit, liberalarts<br />

education by preparing students to meet the educational requirements for success in<br />

leadership, management, team membership, and other productive roles in business and<br />

related fields, and to provide service to the broad <strong>University</strong> community. <strong>The</strong> Kania School<br />

<strong>of</strong> Management provides for the development <strong>of</strong> knowledge, skills, interpersonal and communication<br />

capacities, attitudes and values that will enable students to assume positive,<br />

influential roles in their work organizations and society. This process integrates the capacity<br />

for lifelong learning and decision making with a clear sense <strong>of</strong> ethical responsibilities<br />

and a sensitivity to cultural and demographic diversity. Our mission supports the<br />

<strong>University</strong>’s Statement <strong>of</strong> Mission — to provide pr<strong>of</strong>essional and pre-pr<strong>of</strong>essional programs<br />

“designed to meet the standards <strong>of</strong> the appropriate pr<strong>of</strong>essional fields, and to develop<br />

students who have a clear sense <strong>of</strong> the ethical responsibilities which these fields demand <strong>of</strong><br />

their successful practitioners.”<br />

<strong>The</strong> Kania School <strong>of</strong> Management is a member <strong>of</strong> the SAP <strong>University</strong> Alliance. This<br />

program enhances the value <strong>of</strong> the curriculum by placing the latest information technology<br />

in the classroom to give the next generation <strong>of</strong> business leaders a real-world advantage<br />

right at their fingertips. <strong>The</strong> school has a fully operational SAP R/3 system for instructional<br />

use. Members <strong>of</strong> the faculty have been specifically trained by SAP America and are<br />

integrating the use <strong>of</strong> Enterprise Resource Planning systems in appropriate classes.<br />

DEPARTMENTAL PROGRAMS<br />

Seven programs are available in the Kania School <strong>of</strong> Management: Accounting-Track<br />

in Financial Accounting, Accounting-Track in Managerial Accounting, Finance,<br />

International Business, Management, Marketing, and Operations Management. In addition,<br />

a B.S. in Economics is jointly <strong>of</strong>fered with the College <strong>of</strong> Arts and Sciences. <strong>The</strong>se programs<br />

prepare the student for a career in business or for graduate study. Except for the<br />

requirements <strong>of</strong> the major and the business core, the student in <strong>The</strong> Kania School <strong>of</strong><br />

Management will adhere to the same regulations as the student in the other undergraduate<br />

colleges. At least 50 percent <strong>of</strong> the major and business-core credits must be earned here at<br />

the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong>. Apart from minor exceptions, which require the explicit<br />

approval <strong>of</strong> the dean <strong>of</strong> the school, the student will spend the senior year in residence at the<br />

<strong>University</strong>.<br />

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS<br />

In order to graduate in a business major, in addition to the 2.00 minimum grade-point<br />

average (GPA) overall, the student must have earned a minimum 2.00 GPA in both the<br />

major and business core coursework.<br />

MINORS<br />

A minor in General Business is available to non-business students, with the exception<br />

<strong>of</strong> students majoring in Chemistry-Business, Electronics-Business, International Language-<br />

Business, and Economics (SOM only). It will consist <strong>of</strong> 21 credits:<br />

ACC 253-254 Financial-Managerial Accounting MGT 352Principles <strong>of</strong> Management II<br />

MGT 251 Legal Environment <strong>of</strong> Business MKT 351Introduction to Marketing<br />

<strong>The</strong>se are the courses that are required in five <strong>of</strong> the six foundation areas for the MBA<br />

program in the graduate school. <strong>The</strong> last three must be taken after the other courses, and<br />

may be taken no earlier than the junior year. Minors in Accounting, Economics, Finance,<br />
