PRE-COLLEGE PROGRAMS<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Success<br />

Each year 20 seventh- and eighth-grade students from local school districts are selected<br />

to participate in the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Success program. Students with a C-B grade average<br />

and who are academically able to achieve higher grades are typically selected for the program.<br />

Students who come from economically disadvantaged homes and students with<br />

minority backgrounds are encouraged to apply.<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Success provides academic, social, and cultural opportunities to enable<br />

students to complete high school successfully and gain entrance to a college or university.<br />

Students begin the program by attending a two-week residential Summer Academy focusing<br />

on science, math, critical thinking, and communication skills. Students attend daily<br />

classes, live in dorms, eat in campus dining halls, and participate in nightly academic,<br />

social, and recreational activities.<br />

Additional services such as tutoring, mentoring, Saturday programs, PSAT/SAT<br />

preparation, and college/career planning are <strong>of</strong>fered to students from the time they begin the<br />

program until they graduate from high school. Students must attend the Summer Academy<br />

to be eligible for all follow-up services.<br />

Time Travelers<br />

A three-week summer program co-sponsored by <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong> and NEIU<br />

#19 for high achieving sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students, Time Travelers are<br />

immersed in subject matter from a time period and learn thematic lessons that include science,<br />

math, literature, art, history, and drama from that era.<br />

<strong>The</strong> residential program allows students to experience many aspects <strong>of</strong> college life as<br />

they attend daily classes, live in dorms, eat in campus dining halls, and participate in nightly<br />

academic, social, and recreational activities. Residential students arrive each week on<br />

Sunday at 6:00 p.m. and depart each Friday at 5:00 p.m. A commuter option allows students<br />

to participate in the 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily schedule. Limited scholarships are available.<br />

Students with a B+ or better grade-point average are eligible for the program.<br />

Students with grade-point averages below a B+ may be admitted if they obtain a letter <strong>of</strong><br />

recommendation from a school <strong>of</strong>ficial. All students must include a current grade report<br />

with the program application. Participation is limited and students are selected on a first<br />

Arts Alive<br />

Arts Alive is an intensive four-week program for K-12 teachers and students in grades<br />

9, 10, and 11 who are talented in the arts. Pr<strong>of</strong>essional artists teach courses in painting,<br />

photography, three-dimensional art, theatre, dance, music, poetry, and television and radio<br />

communications. Participants benefit from an initial hands-on workshop on the IDEPPI<br />

model sponsored by the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> the Arts, Philadelphia. Teachers can obtain six graduate<br />

credits from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> the Arts or six Pennsylvania in-service graduate credits.<br />

Arts Alive is sponsored by <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong>; NEIU #19; Keystone College;<br />

local school districts; the Pennsylvania Council <strong>of</strong> the Arts; the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> the Arts,<br />

Philadelphia; and Fleet Bank.<br />
