THE EDUCATIONAL FREEDOM SCHOLARSHIP —In 1990 Joseph E. McCaffrey<br />

established this scholarship to aid students who graduate from Lackawanna County<br />

parochial schools. Mr. McCaffrey, a member <strong>of</strong> the New Jersey Chapter <strong>of</strong> Citizens for<br />

Educational Freedom, hopes this scholarship will remind students to continue to pursue the<br />

goals <strong>of</strong> Citizens for Educational Freedom.<br />

THE ETR AND ASSOCIATES, INC., SCHOLARSHIP —This scholarship was created<br />

by Mr. Robert E. Lee, President <strong>of</strong> ETR and Associates, in appreciation <strong>of</strong> the fine Jesuit<br />

education his daughter received at <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong>. It is open to any student<br />

demonstrating personal financial need.<br />

THE PETER J. FARRELL AND MAIDA LIPPERT FARRELL SCHOLARSHIP —<br />

Proceeds from this scholarship, established in 1988 by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Matthew C. Farrell, Ph.D.,<br />

are intended for students <strong>of</strong> Native American ancestry.<br />

THE LAUREEN FINN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP —Laureen Finn died in her<br />

sophomore year at <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong>. Family, friends and fellow members <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Class <strong>of</strong> 1990 established this scholarship in her memory. Proceedsassist a freshman<br />

Education or English major with preference given to residents <strong>of</strong> Englishtown, New Jersey.<br />

THE MARTHA AND HERBERT FINN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP —This scholarship<br />

was established by William H. Finn in honor <strong>of</strong> Martha and Herbert Finn. <strong>The</strong> proceeds<br />

are to assist students from Southern Connecticut and Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk<br />

counties in New York.<br />

THE MARTHA FITCH SCHOLARSHIP —In 1955 a bequest was made to the<br />

<strong>University</strong> by Miss Martha Fitch, a retired nurse and former superintendent <strong>of</strong> Thompson<br />

Hospital, <strong>Scranton</strong>. Income is used to provide scholarships for needy and deserving students.<br />

THE REV. JOHN J. FITZPATRICK, S.J., SCHOLARSHIP —This scholarship honors<br />

the Rev. John J. Fitzpatrick, S.J., who served <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong> for 22 years in various<br />

roles including Dean <strong>of</strong> Men, Jesuit minister, Student Counselor and <strong>University</strong><br />

Chaplain prior to his death in 1987. <strong>The</strong> scholarship helps students <strong>of</strong> academic excellence<br />

who have demonstrated financial need. Preference is given to students from Northeastern<br />

Pennsylvania who are enrolled in <strong>The</strong> Dexter Hanley College. <strong>The</strong> scholarship was established<br />

through the generosity <strong>of</strong> Midori Y. Rynn, Ph.D., Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Sociology/Criminal<br />

Justice.<br />

THE FLEET PENNSYLVANIA SERVICES SCHOLARSHIP —Sons and daughters <strong>of</strong><br />

Fleet Pennsylvania Services employees are eligible for this scholarship. <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s<br />

Financial Aid <strong>of</strong>fice selects students based on financial need.<br />

THE JAMES H. FOY, M.D., MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP —Established in 1987 by<br />

Dr. and Mrs. Joseph J. Rupp to honor Dr. Foy, whose encouragement and support helped<br />

Dr. Rupp in his education, the scholarship is given to pre-medical students who also demonstrate<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in the humanities.<br />

THE JAMES M. FRANEY SCHOLARSHIP —This scholarship, was started from a<br />

bequest from the estate <strong>of</strong> Mr. James M. Frane, benefits students from the Northeastern<br />

Pennsylvania area.<br />

THE SARA G. FRIEL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP —Before her death in 1982, Sara<br />

G. Friel, aunt <strong>of</strong> then <strong>University</strong> President, William J. Byron, S.J., directed that part <strong>of</strong> her<br />

estate be used to assist deserving and financially needy students each year.<br />
