The roughness elements over water mostly take the form of small steep waves of a wave<br />

length of around 5 cm, although momentum can be transferred also by larger scale breaking<br />

waves. The ocean surface is depicted in fig. 18. Since the roughness is associated with the<br />

waves and the waves are generated by the wind and modified by gravity. Charnock (1955)<br />

proposed that the roughness should depend on u∗ and g. A slightly updated <strong>version</strong> of the<br />

roughness for water looks as the following:<br />

Where the first term reflects the molecular diffusion limit, discussed above, when only few<br />

roughness elements are present. The coefficient, β, denotes the Charnock’s constant. It is a<br />

function of the phase speed c of the dominant waves and u∗. Since the roughness elements<br />

will be mowing with the phase speed of the waves in the direction of the wind. The term<br />

c/u∗ is denoted wave age, because c increases with the duration of the acting wind. β is<br />

varying between 0.01 and 0.07, being smallest for mid-ocean mature waves with large phase<br />

speed. A “typical” value is 0.015. β can be a function of other parameters as well: e.g bottom<br />

topography, swells, and very high winds (e.g. hurricanes) resulting in foam covered waters<br />

that reduces β further (Makin, 2005).<br />

In spite of the functions shown in eq. 19 the roughness of the sea surface still remains one<br />

of the smallest, one can encounter in nature. This means that high wind speeds will be less<br />

efficient in forcing the stabilitytowardsneutral over water than over land, although over water<br />

frequency of neutral stability increases with wind speed. Still high winds can be encountered,<br />

associated with strongly stable flows over water, again reflecting an inhomogeneous situation<br />

where warm air is advected over cold water. Here the friction almost disappears. Again we<br />

shall return to this issue. Just as winter snow can modify the roughness of a land surface<br />

strongly, the winter will some part of the world cover the water with ice, see again fig. 13,<br />

and the roughness now will depend on the characteristics of the ice surface, ranging from<br />

extremely low for smooth solid ice, to quite rough for pack ice. The small z0 also means that<br />

the turbulence typically is lower over the water than over land, reflected also in a lower ABL<br />

height over water than over land. The small z0 also means that the z0T and z0q are close<br />

to z0 for low wind speeds, and start deviating only for rough pack ice or larger wind speeds,<br />

with rough sea.<br />
