Socioeconomic Analysis of Agroforestry Systems Applied on Demonstration Farms in Central America Carlos Reiche Introduction Tropical Forests in Central America have traditionally supplied many different wood products. The majority of low income rural residents have relied on forests as a source of timber, fuel-wood, charcoal, poles for roundwood construction, stakes to support crops, fence posts, and fodder for farm animals. However, the cumulative effect of recent deforestation and deterioration of natural resources has been land degradation and an acute wood shortage. For the majority of small farmers, the current increase of pressure upon their land and their shrinking resource base makes it difficult for them to apply adequate practices to manage trees, without a corre- sponding increase in their technical knowledge. Also, smallholder sil- viculture has received little research attention, until recently, and socioeconomic information has been lacking. In response to the increasing demand for tree products, the Centro Agron6mico Tropical de Investigacibn y Ensefianza (CATIE) and its Tree Crop Project have developed an innovative multidisciplinary agroforestry strategy to transfer tested species and techniques for growing multipurpose trees, within the framework of farmers' needs and the potential of their land use systems. Farms are selected by a multidisciplinary method for rapid rural appraisal. Agroforestry systems are designed for each farm which cor- respond not only to the ecology of the site, but also to the diverse objectives, restrictions, and needs felt by the farmers. By developing over time sustained production from a tree crop component, the aim of the Project is to create clusters of demonstration
