data have demonstrated that <strong>oestrus</strong> can be detected <strong>in</strong> <strong>dairy</strong> <strong>cows</strong>;<br />

identify the mount<strong>in</strong>g cow <strong>and</strong> the cow st<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> be mounted. Limitations<br />

<strong>of</strong> this work arose due <strong>to</strong> the pro<strong>to</strong>type set up <strong>of</strong> UWB, although equipment<br />

had been tested <strong>and</strong> problems resolved <strong>to</strong> ensure the capability for longer–<br />

term moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>dairy</strong> <strong>cows</strong>. The results from the prelim<strong>in</strong>ary tests<br />

provide def<strong>in</strong>itive evidence that UWB could be used for the purpose <strong>of</strong><br />

oestrous <strong>detection</strong>. Future work would be <strong>to</strong> develop pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> concept trials<br />

<strong>to</strong> test UWB for the purpose <strong>of</strong> oestrous <strong>detection</strong>, moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g <strong>dairy</strong> cow<br />

behaviour cont<strong>in</strong>uously, <strong>in</strong> real-time for au<strong>to</strong>mated <strong>detection</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>oestrus</strong>.<br />
