<strong>in</strong>fluenced by other fac<strong>to</strong>rs such as cysts <strong>and</strong> ulcerous <strong>in</strong>flammations <strong>and</strong><br />

the cont<strong>in</strong>uous sampl<strong>in</strong>g needed <strong>to</strong> determ<strong>in</strong>e the changes <strong>in</strong> resistance,<br />

which can cause irritation <strong>of</strong> the reproductive tract result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>flammation which will both h<strong>in</strong>der results <strong>and</strong> cause discomfort (Firk et<br />

al., 2002). The animal’s temperament, position<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the probe <strong>and</strong><br />

nutritional (m<strong>in</strong>eral) imbalance can also alter resistance (Rorie et al.,<br />

2002). Vag<strong>in</strong>al mucus resistance as a measure <strong>of</strong> oestrous <strong>detection</strong> is<br />

impractical but could be overcome by implants cont<strong>in</strong>uously record<strong>in</strong>g<br />

resistance <strong>and</strong> plott<strong>in</strong>g the results <strong>to</strong> observe changes over time.<br />

1.5.2.5 Rectal Palpation <strong>and</strong> Ultrasonography<br />

Rectal palpation <strong>and</strong> ultrasonography are used <strong>to</strong> evaluate ovarian activity<br />

<strong>and</strong> diagnose the stage <strong>of</strong> the oestrous cycle. Rectal palpation is used <strong>to</strong><br />

detect the presence <strong>of</strong> the corpus luteum. Ultrasound is used <strong>to</strong> determ<strong>in</strong>e<br />

which ovary the grow<strong>in</strong>g follicle is situated on by measur<strong>in</strong>g the diameter,<br />

then once a preovula<strong>to</strong>ry follicle is obvious the ovary can be moni<strong>to</strong>red at<br />

<strong>in</strong>tervals <strong>to</strong> determ<strong>in</strong>e the time <strong>of</strong> ovulation, which is when the follicle<br />

disappears, for AI (Roel<strong>of</strong>s et al., 2005). These techniques can also be<br />

used <strong>to</strong> detect silent heats, rectal palpation with 69.7% accuracy <strong>and</strong><br />

ultrasonography 89.0% accuracy (Zdunczyk et al., 2009). However these<br />

techniques can be time consum<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> impractical as a method <strong>of</strong> oestrous<br />

<strong>detection</strong>, <strong>and</strong> must be carried out by either a veter<strong>in</strong>arian, which is costly,<br />

or a skilled s<strong>to</strong>ckperson (Foote, 1975).<br />

1.5.3 Au<strong>to</strong>mated Technologies<br />

Au<strong>to</strong>mated technologies are advantageous for oestrous <strong>detection</strong> because<br />

they moni<strong>to</strong>r <strong>cows</strong> for <strong>oestrus</strong> 24 hours a day cont<strong>in</strong>uously requir<strong>in</strong>g little<br />

<strong>in</strong>put from the herdsman. Most electronic technologies fulfil the criteria set<br />

out by Senger (1994), for the ‘ideal’ system <strong>of</strong> oestrous <strong>detection</strong>.<br />

Although au<strong>to</strong>mated methods <strong>of</strong> <strong>detection</strong> are efficient they lack accuracy<br />

at detect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>oestrus</strong> when compared <strong>to</strong> frequent visual observations <strong>and</strong><br />

error rates are <strong>of</strong>ten <strong>in</strong>creased. Au<strong>to</strong>mated methods must also be accurate<br />

at detect<strong>in</strong>g signs <strong>of</strong> <strong>oestrus</strong> that are related <strong>to</strong> ovulation <strong>in</strong> order <strong>to</strong><br />

correctly time AI <strong>to</strong> improve conception rates.<br />

1.5.3.1 Pedometers <strong>and</strong> Activity Moni<strong>to</strong>rs<br />

Pedometry <strong>and</strong> activity moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g detect changes <strong>in</strong> the physical activity<br />

<strong>of</strong> the cow through motion sens<strong>in</strong>g analysis. The relationship between<br />
