Chapter 5 - Pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> Concept <strong>of</strong> UWB for the Purpose <strong>of</strong><br />

Oestrous Detection<br />

5.1 INTRODUCTION<br />

Oestrous <strong>detection</strong> is a major contribu<strong>to</strong>r <strong>to</strong> poor fertility as only 50% <strong>of</strong> all<br />

<strong>cows</strong> are detected <strong>in</strong> st<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>oestrus</strong> (Van Eerdenburg et al., 2002), with<br />

no current improvements <strong>to</strong> this figure. Detection <strong>of</strong> <strong>oestrus</strong> is an essential<br />

prerequisite for AI, so arguably is the central event <strong>in</strong> bov<strong>in</strong>e reproduction.<br />

Therefore <strong>in</strong>creased oestrous <strong>detection</strong> rates are a necessity <strong>to</strong> improv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>dairy</strong> cow fertility <strong>and</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>itability <strong>of</strong> the <strong>dairy</strong> herd (Pecsok et al., 1994).<br />

In order <strong>to</strong> improve oestrous <strong>detection</strong> rates a method <strong>of</strong> oestrous<br />

<strong>detection</strong> must be developed which is both efficient <strong>and</strong> accurate at<br />

detect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>oestrus</strong> (Senger, 1994); such as UWB, described <strong>in</strong> Chapter 4,<br />

which may provide a <strong>novel</strong> solution <strong>to</strong> the problem.<br />

Many attempts <strong>to</strong> develop au<strong>to</strong>mated methods <strong>of</strong> oestrous <strong>detection</strong> have<br />

not succeeded commercially for a variety <strong>of</strong> reasons. A possible solution <strong>to</strong><br />

overcome the limitations <strong>of</strong> current oestrous <strong>detection</strong> techniques is <strong>to</strong><br />

measure cow position rather than just activity. Global position<strong>in</strong>g system<br />

(GPS) is a possible solution <strong>to</strong> moni<strong>to</strong>r 3D position, although GPS cannot<br />

determ<strong>in</strong>e a subjects’ precise position with accuracy <strong>in</strong>doors. Ultra-wide<br />

b<strong>and</strong> (UWB) technology (as discussed <strong>in</strong> Chapter 4) has shown potential <strong>to</strong><br />

accurately determ<strong>in</strong>e <strong>cows</strong>’ position with centimetre accuracy <strong>in</strong> the <strong>dairy</strong><br />

barn <strong>and</strong> au<strong>to</strong>matically detect both mount<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> <strong>cows</strong> st<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> be<br />

mounted. The position <strong>of</strong> <strong>cows</strong> <strong>and</strong> their <strong>in</strong>teractions can be recorded by<br />

UWB <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>ferences made about their behaviour <strong>in</strong> order <strong>to</strong> detect <strong>oestrus</strong>.<br />

These behaviours can be detected <strong>in</strong> real-time, therefore can be used <strong>to</strong><br />

determ<strong>in</strong>e the onset <strong>of</strong> <strong>oestrus</strong> <strong>and</strong> thus allow for accurately timed AI <strong>to</strong><br />

co<strong>in</strong>cide with ovulation <strong>and</strong> maximse conception rates. It is evident that<br />

UWB has the ability <strong>to</strong> overcome the limitations <strong>of</strong> current oestrous<br />

<strong>detection</strong> techniques.<br />

Aims <strong>of</strong> this study were <strong>to</strong> develop pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> concept <strong>of</strong> UWB <strong>to</strong> detect<br />

<strong>oestrus</strong> by focuss<strong>in</strong>g on:<br />

<br />

Develop<strong>in</strong>g s<strong>of</strong>tware <strong>and</strong> communications <strong>to</strong> enable real<br />

time position<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> identification <strong>of</strong> <strong>cows</strong> approach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>oestrus</strong> (mount<strong>in</strong>g <strong>cows</strong>) <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> st<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>oestrus</strong><br />

(st<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> be mounted) by moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g their behaviour<br />
