Pav1e himse1f is the measure Of duration of the action.<br />

in which the successive stases me1t one into the other<br />

in a manner akin to Berssonian notions of pure duration.<br />

The authoria1 voice treats time as an open structure<br />

throush which it can move free1v and revea1 time.as<br />

measured bv the emotiona1 intensitv fe1t bV the<br />

characters. Thus. for Pav1e his ~ournev is a sins1e<br />

moment. his break for freedom.<br />

The novel has been shown to incorporate so rar<br />

three narratins voices which construct different<br />

temporal schemes throush which the events of the novel<br />

are narrated: the chronic1er. author. and historian.<br />

Linear succession. the mu1tiplicitv of the human<br />

dimension of time. and the cohesion or a historica1<br />

period considered as a sinsle unit. are a11 different<br />

wavs of conceivins the temporal relationships of<br />

succession and duration.<br />

At the same time thev are also<br />

creative orders. u1timate1v expressins ide010cical and<br />

ethical positions as culturallv informed wavs of<br />

represent ins the re1ationships between past, present,<br />

and future.<br />

The relationship of characters to these<br />

time schemes. and the extent to which thev are seen to<br />

act as acents or action. express a re1ationship between<br />

the individual and historv.<br />

Thus time is tranSformed<br />

from a purelv svmbo1ic order, the matrix of events, into<br />
