The sailor represents what Raji6 was not and<br />

could not be. an alternative bein~-in-time<br />

in which the<br />

the diarist's repressed psvche aChieve a new<br />

si~ni~icance.<br />

However. the sailor onlv ever remains potential.<br />

The dream closes and-the text returns to the diarist.<br />

who is cau~ht between the insu~~iciencv in li~e embodied<br />

in Raji6 of a repressed past. and an anticipation in the<br />

sailor o~ a potential p~esent and future. Carnojevi6's<br />

writin~ o~ his diarv has itself been an exercise in<br />

rehearsin~ the meanin~ of beinC-in-time. The diarv's<br />

lack of temporal markers to indicate when and over what<br />

period it was written is countered bV this emphasis on<br />

time. Throu~h his writin~ of his self in memorv and in<br />

dream he has revealed "time as a function of the<br />

internal structure of consciousness" (Sa).<br />

Raji6 and<br />

the sailor are products of his creation. representations<br />

of his psvche in memorv. and on a transcendental plane.<br />

The lack of a Unified subject as the expression of<br />

consciousness. also leads to the-conclusion that time is<br />

not a unified structure. but is split amoncst the<br />

various personae assumed bv the eco.<br />
