the novel. there is<br />

hardly any synchronic narration in the episode when<br />

Rjepnin &oes on holiday to Cornwall. Most o~ the verbs<br />

are in the past tense.<br />

The narrator takes on the task<br />

o~ retrospective narration. On his return ~rom Cornwall<br />

build uP. there is a more ~requent<br />

synchronic narration. and an emphasis on the<br />

prince' a mental torment.,<br />

There are occasiona on which speech marks are<br />

the text althouch the tense structures and<br />

the persons o~ the verb indicate direct dialo~ue between<br />

the prince and his wi~e.<br />

Their apeech is not always<br />

marked as distinct ~rom the descriPtive scenes o~ the<br />

text. equatinc their voices with the narrator's. Such<br />

instances are more ~requent in the last part o~ the<br />

novel. In the ~inal pa~es the prince visits the<br />

American Embassy 'to ask that his wi~e<br />

be allowed to stay<br />

with her aunt. In this scene a ~irst person pronoun is<br />
