complexity of voice.<br />

In Chapter Pour we examined the<br />

way in which his two final novela, Oru~a knji~a seoba<br />

and Roman 0<br />

Londonu rely on voice for their<br />

compositional coherence in relation to time.<br />

Each voice<br />

is situated at a different point in time in relation to<br />

the events which it describes, and narrates the events<br />

with different emphases on their sequence and duration.<br />

In Oru~a knji~a seoQa there is a conflict between time<br />

as conceived by Pavle and time as conceived by the<br />

institutions which he serves.<br />

Pavle has a certain view<br />

of history, of his place within that history, and of the<br />

place of the Serbian nation. which is at odds with the<br />

demands of the empires which he serves, and with the<br />

emer.in~<br />

European culture with which he feels no<br />

affinity. Rjepnin, in Crnjanski's last novel, Roman 0<br />

Londonu, is also in conflict with the dominant oulture<br />

surroundin~ him in post-war London. However, the<br />

emphasis in this novel falls on the conflictin~ voices<br />

within him.<br />
