CHAPTER ONE<br />

The~ took all my books and papers. The~<br />

broke the cigarettes which were in the<br />

suitcase in a cigarette case. The~<br />

probabl~ thought that poets put their<br />

espionage information into cigarettes?<br />

I held a diplomatic passport. and<br />

I protested, but the~ did their work<br />

Quite phlegmaticall~. Later, all mv<br />

papers were returned to me, in order.<br />

The~ Questioned me. particularl~<br />

about my aQuaintances in Rome, and about<br />

Count Ciano •••<br />

Then the~ asked me what was my<br />

relationship with Count Ciano?<br />

I said. official, "in accordance<br />

with my rank.<br />

He delivers his recollections of that interview in a<br />

bitter tone.<br />

That initial interview and the distrustful<br />

attitude he encountered in England served to make him<br />

feel all the more uncomfortable in a countr~<br />

in which he<br />

was to st~ for twent~<br />

five ~ears.<br />

During the war he worked for the Yugoslav<br />

government-in-exile in London.<br />

His position was not of<br />

political significance in that he continued working in<br />

the information office. but he was now a full official<br />

of the government.<br />

His link with the government during<br />

the war confirmed the opinion of his enemies that he was<br />

a ro~alist<br />

and anti-communist. while their vitriolic<br />

attacks against him confirmed Crnjanski in his belief<br />

that danger waited for him if he returned home after the<br />

war. The partisan victor~ during the Second World War<br />

brought the Communist Part~ of Yugoslavia to power. The<br />

communists set the terms of their government b~<br />

establishing Yugoslavia as a people's republic, and in<br />

the earl~ ~ears conducted campaigns against all who were
