Pavle wrote.that he would have to deceive
their old step-father, Vuk Isakovi~, tell
him that Pav1e will marr~ in Russia and
carr~ on the fami1~ name, but that
. truthful1~ he, Pavle, no loncer thinks of
it.
Vuk had two dauchters with Dafina, whereas Pav1e is an
adopted son.
This relationship is in itself a
subversive twist to'the epic voice and moral code which
is one of the featUres of the novel.
