more than two centuries, so Sicilians are specialized <strong>in</strong> fish<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

this k<strong>in</strong>d of gear. Target species are swordfish (54% of total catches),<br />

Northern bluef<strong>in</strong> tuna <strong>and</strong> albacore (IREPA, 2006).<br />

In 1997, UNIMAR consortium took up a census of all fish<strong>in</strong>g<br />

companies for the Italian M<strong>in</strong>istry of Agricultural Politics. From<br />

1999 to 2000, data from fish<strong>in</strong>g licences <strong>and</strong> official statistics,<br />

record<strong>in</strong>g generic “multiple use” fish<strong>in</strong>g, have been improved with<br />

<strong>in</strong>terviews to fishermen, to settle the actual use of each fish<strong>in</strong>g gear<br />

(UNIMAR, 2001). Accord<strong>in</strong>g to UNIMAR census, 15,593 vessels<br />

were active <strong>in</strong> Italy <strong>in</strong> 1997. In 1999 there were an estimated 1,519<br />

pelagic drift<strong>in</strong>g longl<strong>in</strong>e vessels (9.7%) (Table A4.3).<br />

The number of large-scale vessels fish<strong>in</strong>g for tuna <strong>and</strong> swordfish with<br />

longl<strong>in</strong>e gear has changed over the past few years. For examples,<br />

the number of large vessels authorized for fish<strong>in</strong>g with longl<strong>in</strong>e<br />

decreased from 31% <strong>in</strong> 1997 to 20% <strong>in</strong> 2005 (government data from<br />

Port authorities of Marsala, 2006).<br />

A4.3. Fish<strong>in</strong>g Gear<br />

The ma<strong>in</strong>l<strong>in</strong>e is made of braided polyamide (nylon) filament, while<br />

the branch l<strong>in</strong>es are made of polyamide monofilament. Council<br />

Regulation (EC) 1626/1994 established a 60 km limit for the length of<br />

ma<strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>es for longl<strong>in</strong>e vessels. Swordfish vessels beg<strong>in</strong> to set gear <strong>in</strong><br />

the late afternoon by h<strong>and</strong> (no mechanization), the gear soaks dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the night <strong>and</strong> is hauled with a l<strong>in</strong>e hauler.<br />

In the area <strong>in</strong>vestigated, the colour of both ma<strong>in</strong> a branch l<strong>in</strong>es, vessel<br />

power, trip length <strong>and</strong> fish<strong>in</strong>g days, vary among vessels.<br />

characteristics from the literature, while Table A4.4c is based on<br />
