pelagic sharks are captured as bycatch by the Mediterranean large<br />

pelagic fishery. These species by order of importance are: blue shark<br />

(Prionace glauca, IUCN Red List assessment 2006 NT), shortf<strong>in</strong><br />

mako (Isurus oxyr<strong>in</strong>chus, NT), thresher shark (Alopias vulp<strong>in</strong>us,<br />

DD), porbeagle (Lamna nasus, VU, CR Mediterranean), tope shark<br />

(Galeorh<strong>in</strong>us galeus, VU, DD Mediterranean), bigeye thresher<br />

(Alopias superciliosus, DD), s<strong>and</strong>bar shark (Carcharh<strong>in</strong>us plumbeus,<br />

NT), bask<strong>in</strong>g shark (Cetorh<strong>in</strong>us maximus, VU, CITES Appendix II),<br />

bluntnose sixgill shark (Hexanchus griseus, NT), <strong>and</strong> the smooth<br />

<strong>Shark</strong>s are considered to be of moderate economic importance for<br />

the Italian fishery. In 2004 shark catches were 0.47% of all gear fish<br />

catches <strong>and</strong> revenue from sharks was only 0.57% of total fish revenue<br />

(IREPA, 2006) (Table A4.5).<br />
