INTEGRATING THE EXPERIENCE OF THE SYDNEY 2000 OLYMPIC GAMES IN THE OLYMPIC PREPARATION FOR THE ATHENS 2004 OLYMPIC GAMES By Dr Konstantinos KARTALIS (GRE) Secretary General to the Ministry of Culture for the "Athens 2004" Olympic Games First of all, I would like to thank the International Olympic Academy and personally President Filaretos for the excellent work that is being done at the Academy, for the excellent work that is being done in Olympia, for the great event that takes place every year in Olympia with respect to young people and the Olympic ideals and the Olympic values. I think that this is a great contribution to Olympism and the Olympic Games in general. Before I start the presentation, I would like to say something that has to do with my friend Sandy, that is Mr Hollway, but I have the privilege to call him Sandy. Every time I see him after the Games, he looks younger, as compared to myself who, they tell me, I look older, and I understand that this is because of the pressure that accumulates, going closer to the Games, and as a matter of fact, I admire the work that they have done in Sydney, and they have done excellent work, and we all know that. At the same time, I envy him, because, before the Games in Sydney, I thought I had some friends, I said, "Well it is Australia and Athens, well, Sydney and Athens, and we are both concerned about the Games. Now, we are alone, until the next city, of course. But, anyway, I think we have gained a lot of good experience from Sydney, very good experience, and I will go through this, what kind of lessons we got from Sydney and how we are trying to introduce them in the planning that we are having for the Games in Athens in 2004. So, this is the topic of the presentation and, as Mr Filaretos said, I will be very happy to answer any kind of questions that you will have. Well, obviously, the Olympic Games in Sydney were an excellent opportunity for the Greek government and the Organising Committee of Athens 2004 to send a number of people, so that to get trained, educated on how things are being done in the event, on the spot. As a matter of fact, we sent altogether 150 observers from the public sector, from various Ministries and from the Organising Committee, who followed the Games not as spectators, but as Olympic students. We gained a lot of experience and that helped a lot in the preparation of Athens. If you allow me, you asked Mr Hollway before a number of questions about the transfer of knowledge.
