I am pleased to present the 2012 School’s Report for the KwaZulu–Natal Department of Education. It is a report that provides information with regard to the path that the Department of Education has traversed in 2012 in our quest for quality education for all learners in our province. This report shows progress and consolidation of the efforts that have been implemented to date. In fact, 2012 has been characterised as a year of International and National assessments. The education system in our country and province have subjected itself to these external evaluations to independently track the measure of impact that the system is making in the achievement of education outcomes. The TIMMS report which measure trends in mathematics and science performance have improved over the last decade. Similarly, the PIRLS report which measured reading efficiency of learners have also shown an improvement in the reading abilities of our learners. However, there is more that remains to be done to which we are committed to doing. It is noteworthy that the national results that we present in the KwaZulu-Natal schools report 2012 in respect of the Annual National Assessment (ANA) and the National Senior Certificate (NSC) confirm an increase in the performance of the schooling system in KwaZulu–Natal. The data presented in this report will make guide in a systematic way an improvement in the interventions to be made. The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education is closely working towards a data – driven delivery system. This is to ensure that any action we take to correct the deficiencies in the system will be based on evidence that exists and therefore can be tailor made. The 2012 NSC results show that KwaZulu-Natal has achieved 73.1% pass rate with 93 003 learners qualifying for the NSC. This signifies a 5% increase in pass rate in 2012 compared to 2011 (68.1%) and a contribution of 10 000 more learners passing in 2012 compared to 83 201 that passed in 2011. This will contribute to the increase in the skills base of the country. The 2012 pass rate is also the highest pass rate that the province has achieved since the introduction of the NSC. We are also encouraged by an improvement in the number of learners who passed Mathematics and Physical Science compared to 2011. These achievements serve as a yardstick for our direction for improvement going forward. We remain committed to working harder to ensure that no learner is left behind.
