11.1 Introduction<br />

Since 1997 Samoa has been the officially recognised<br />

name for what was previously know<br />

as Western Samoa. 622 It is situated about halfway<br />

between Hawaii and New Zealand, with<br />

American Samoa as its closest neighbour. 623<br />

Demographics<br />

The Samoa Statistics Department Census<br />

report estimated the population at 179 166; 624<br />

other sources report it at 178 631 and more<br />

recently at 217 083 (est. July 2008). 625<br />
