(4) In thisregulation—<br />

“the British St<strong>and</strong>ard Specification” means the British St<strong>and</strong>ard Specificationfor Spray<br />

Reducing Devices for Heavy Goods <strong>Vehicles</strong> published under the referenceBS AU 200: Part<br />

I: 1984 <strong>and</strong> BS AU 200: Part 2: 1984 <strong>and</strong> references to a “containmentdevice” are references<br />

to the device so described in the British St<strong>and</strong>ardSpecification;<br />

“the specified area”means the area formed by the overall length of the vehicle<strong>and</strong> the middle<br />

80% of the shortest distance between the inner edges of anytwo wheels on opposite sides of the<br />

vehicle (such distance being ascertainedwhen the vehicle is fitted with suitable tyres inflated<br />

to a pressure recommendedby the manufacturer, but excluding any bulging of the tyres near<br />

the ground).<br />

(5) Nothingin this regulation derogates from any requirement specified in regulation 63.<br />

Maintenance of spray suppression devices<br />

65. Every part of every containment device with which a vehicle isrequired to be fitted by the<br />

provisions of regulation 64shall at all times when the vehicle is on a road be maintained free from<br />

anyobvious defect which would be likely to affect adversely the effectivenessof the device.<br />

PART III<br />

PLATES, MARKINGS, TESTING AND INSPECTION<br />

Plates for goods vehicles <strong>and</strong> buses<br />

66.—(1) This regulationapplies to—<br />

(a) a wheeledheavy motor car or motor car first used on or after 1st January 1968 not being—<br />

(i) a dual-purposevehicle;<br />

(ii) an agriculturalmotor vehicle;<br />

(iii) aworks truck;<br />

(iv) a pedestrain-controlledvehicle; or<br />

(v) save asprovided in sub-paragraph (b) below, apassenger vehicle;<br />

(b) a bus (whetheror not it is an articulated bus) first used on or after 1st April 1982;<br />

(c) a wheeledlocomotive or motor tractor first used on or after 1st April 1973 not being—<br />

(i) an agriculturalmotor vehicle;<br />

(ii) an industrialtractor;<br />

(iii) aworks truck;<br />

(iv) engineeringplant; or<br />
