Putting the survey into context…<br />

Before interpreting research results it is useful to consider the context, or <strong>events</strong> <strong>that</strong><br />

occurred, prior to fieldwork (16 May to 12 June 2011).<br />

Factors <strong>that</strong> may <strong>have</strong> influenced the results include:<br />

• Earthquakes (September and February) and aftershocks in Christchurch, and<br />

continued media coverage (fieldwork was completed<br />

before June 13 quakes)<br />

• March Get Ready Get Thru TV advertising was cancelled<br />

following February earthquake<br />

• Volcanic eruptions in Chile (June) and Iceland (May)<br />

• Tornado in Albany (May)<br />

• Floods in Mississippi (May)<br />

• Earthquake and tsunami in Japan (March)<br />

• Cyclone Yasi hit northern Queensland (February)<br />

• Floods in Queensland (December/January)<br />

• Pike River Mine disaster (November)<br />
