Disaster awareness<br />

• Southland residents are more likely than average to strongly disagree <strong>that</strong> there will be someone there<br />

to help following a disaster (20%, cf. 10% national average) and <strong>that</strong> there will always be adequate<br />

warning before disaster strikes (56%, cf. 41% national average).<br />

• Southland residents are less likely to say <strong>that</strong> a hurricane, cyclone, or storm (34%, cf. 53% national<br />

average), a tsunami (58%, cf. 70% national average), or a volcanic eruption (27%, cf. 51% national<br />

average) is a disaster <strong>that</strong> could occur in their lifetime.<br />

• In the event <strong>of</strong> an earthquake, Southland residents are more likely than average to say <strong>that</strong> you should<br />

alert/check on family and friends (76%, cf. 49% national average), and listen to the radio for further<br />

information (21%, cf. 8% national average).<br />
