An integrated, community
based programme to
regenerate Scarborough is to
be delivered through urban
renaissance to meet the RES
Objective of restoring civic
pride and engagement through
community based renaissance
in major towns.
commercial development and
economic diversity.
Policy EC9 (Retail and Leisure
Development) identifies
Scarborough as an area for
new retail and leisure
development.
The RES recognises that
coastal towns face significant
economic and social
disadvantage both through
declining traditional industries
and poor communications links
and believes new opportunities
in urban renaissance in
Scarborough is contributing
towards a step change in the
approach to reversing long
term structural decline.
The RSS recognises the social
and economic constraints of
the seasonal nature of tourism
and the problems of peripheral
isolation exacerbated by poor
transport links, all of which act
as a barrier to economic
development.
