Hence taking these trends into consideration along with a high figure for live births (11,022) between 1991 and 2001, Scarborough suffers from notably high levels of mortality rates. Scarborough Whitby and Ryedale PCT’s Public Health Annual Report 2004 highlights the fact that the town’s communities, particularly those residing in Castle, Eastfield, Falsgrave and Weaponness wards, suffer from significant levels of health deprivation. In addition the report highlights that these wards perform poorly, particularly in terms of infant and adult mortality rates, life expectancy, teenage conception levels and proportion of residents with long-term illness. 4.2.3 Scarborough Borough’s as well as the town’s population, when reviewed by various age bands, appears to be relatively older compared to regional and national averages. In 2001, 55% and 51% of the Borough’s and Town’s population respectively is aged 40 or above. In comparison, only 47% of the regional and national population bases fell within the same age bands. Understandably then, at 42.7 years, the average age of the Borough’s residents is much higher than the national average of 38.6. In addition, between 1991 and 2001 the Borough witnessed significant growth of some 28% in residents aged between 50 and 59 years (compared to 26% in Scarborough Town and 21% in Yorkshire & Humber region). increased by 26%, during the same time period. These trends characterise the ageing nature of Scarborough’s population. However, lack of graduate opportunities within Scarborough forces the younger dynamic and skilled workforce to move out of the Borough. These reasons may account for the recent decline in 20-29 year olds witnessed by the Town and the wider Borough.
