8 Infrastructure capacity (utilities)
8.1.1 The following position was established following consultations with stakeholders.
8.2 Communications
8.2.1 BT provides telephone and broadband communications to business and private
customers. Cable and Wireless Global provide broadband communications to business
users. Both have infrastructure into the Scarborough town sufficient for current use and
both would be willing and able to expand the network as new business became
available.
8.2.2 Other broadband possibilities include the North Yorkshire Wide Area Network which is a
wireless system which could be used by community groups or businesses.
Conclusion
There are currently no issues with expanding the telecommunications to Scarborough
and it is expected that supply will closely follow demand.
8.3 Electrical supply
8.3.1 There are currently 4 primary substations serving Scarborough. Only one, in central
Scarborough, has significant capacity available (37%). Eastfield substation is 95%
utilised.
8.3.2 On average the substations are 83% utilised, although availability for expansion varies
from area to area. Generally there is little potential for expansion of the load within the
capacity of the existing network.
8.3.3 There is a plan to install a new substation on a site between Scarborough Town Centre
and Eastfield, giving an increase in capacity of just over 20% which would be capable of
serving approximately 3000 homes. Expansion beyond that limit would necessitate
significant investment and could take several years to implement.
8.3.4 A programme of improvement of the low voltage network in the town centre is being
implemented to improve the quality and reliability of supplies.
