area level. This analysis benchmarks Scarborough’s performance with the regional and
national averages. In addition, where relevant, Scarborough’s performance has also
been benchmarked against that of comparator regional and national towns.
4.2 Demographics
4.2.1 The basic resource of labour supply is the resident population which supports, and is
supported by, the local economy. Scarborough district has a population of 106,240
(Census 2001), a figure that has been almost stagnant between 1991 and 2001. Natural
change and migration are the two core sources of population change. At 51,152 (Census
2001), a little less than 50% of the Borough’s population resides in Scarborough Town
comprising of Castle, Central, Eastfield, Falsgrave Park, Newby, North Bay, Northstead,
Ramshill, Stepney, Weaponness and Woodlands wards 2 . The population of the town has
increased by 2.5% between 1991 and 2001. Changes in ward boundaries since 1991
and subsequent increases in the spatial area which constitutes Scarborough town are, to
an extent, responsible for this population growth.
