7.6 Sewage treatment
7.6.1 There are two Sewage Treatment Works (STWs) located in the Scarborough area;
Scarborough STW serving the north of the town and Seamer STW serving the south.
7.6.2 Scarborough STW is a relatively new works that serves the majority of Scarborough
town. We were advised that whilst Scarborough STW will require some enhancement to
the process capacity, major restructuring or reconstruction will not be required to sustain
the increases in flow commensurate with the growth scenarios indicated in Section 7.1
above.
7.6.3 Seamer STW, on the other hand, is a small works that would require a significant
increase in treatment capacity. We were advised that the scale of the enhancement
required could not be accommodated on the existing site.
Conclusion
As the potential growth areas tend to be located to the south of Scarborough, any
additional flow would tend to impact on the Seamer catchment and thus Seamer STW.
As such it appears that a new STW would be required on a new site. The construction of
a new STW site would need to take account of sensitive areas such as the Heritage
Coast within which the existing Scarborough one is located.
An alternative may be to utilise the capacity at Scarborough STW, through the
construction of a sewerage pumping station and extensive rising main. However this
may also prove to be logistically difficult and prohibitively expensive.
7.7 Summary of issues
7.7.1 It appears that there are adequate water resources and water treatment facilities
available to meet increases in demand over and above current forecasts up until 2029,
following which additional resources need to be sourced, perhaps from Bridlington.
7.7.2 However, the main factor inhibiting growth appears to be a lack of sewage treatment
capacity at Seamer STW. According to YWS, Seamer does not have the capacity to
treat flows over and above current forecast levels, and adjacent land is not available on
the existing site to enhance the treatment process. As such, a new site would be
required.
