Eastern Wetland Restoration (2006) – twin 48-inch culverts with slide gates were installed where the Center Road and Eastern Road (above) cross the remnant Banana Creek Canal. The gates are kept high to force even distribution of water flow through the other roadway culverts to the various wetland cells. Flow velocity through the restored wetland is very gradual, so the gates can be lowered to rapidly drain some of the water direct to Lake Hancock when high rainfall or flood events are forecast. This allows control of the depth and duration of the wetland hydroperiods for wildlife utilization. Northwest Marsh (2006) – a couple acres of pasture was excavated to create marsh habitat; providing some pre-treatment of storm & surface water contributing from off-site areas. The wetland grading is complete and planting being conducted in the photograph. Northwest Marsh (2009) – The plantings have matured and recruited to provide dense coverage; marsh provides wildlife habitat as well as water quality benefits; dominant species include fireflag, arrowhead, duck-potato, bulrush, and pickerelweed.
