Wildlife – substantial populations of wood storks are observed foraging within the restored marshes during the winter breeding season. Wildlife – as a result of drained conditions over decades, live and laurel oaks recruited and generated within historic wetland areas. Like the bahiagrass, hydrologic restoration resulted in mortality of these and other inappropriate species, providing snags for roosting opportunities by wood storks and other avian species. Wildlife – the substantial wildlife activity at the Reserve includes over 112 avian species observed during monitoring and surveys. With the substantial fish resources readily available in the adjacent Lake Hancock, bald eagles are commonly observed at the Reserve. Three inactive and one active eagle nest are present within the Reserve. Wildlife – the alligator population is estimated to be 4,000-5,000 in the adjacent lake. Typically smaller alligators visit and reside in the restored wetlands, however there are also larger individuals known to be present in the Reserve.
